Magical journey of discovery: New exhibition in Göttingen opens doors!

On August 27, 2025, the interactive special exhibition “Magic! – How our world organizes itself” will open in the Knowledge Forum at the University of Göttingen. This innovative exhibition, curated by Tatjana Dübbel and Manuel Maidorn, is a collaboration with the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization (MPI-DS), which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The exhibition covers a variety of topics, including cloud physics as well as turbulent flows, and aims to investigate the dynamics and self-organization in nature.

The duration of the exhibition extends from August 28, 2025 to February 1, 2026. It takes place in a special exhibition area called “Freiraum”, which covers an area of 80 square meters. The exhibits are designed to delight and engage visitors of all ages, from children to adults. Planned exhibits include a model of a wind farm, a 3D simulation of bacteria and various interactive games.

Opening and accompanying program

The public opening of the exhibition begins on Wednesday, August 27, 2025 at 6:30 p.m. In order to promote interactivity and exchange with the public, there will be a comprehensive accompanying program that includes lectures and special hands-on activities. A particularly spectacular laser show will be on the outside facade of Forum Wissen, which will enrich the evening ambience of the opening.

Public tours are also offered every Saturday from 11 a.m. throughout the duration of the exhibition. Special workshops are also planned, including a photography workshop with Emilia Hesse on October 5th and a sketchnote and journaling workshop with Tanja Wehr on October 19th. An interdisciplinary dialogue in which well-known scientists from the MPI-DS will take part will take place on November 19th at 6:30 p.m.

Education and research

The exhibition is not only intended for the general public, but also invites school classes to actively engage with the topics. Bookable offers for schools are available and should be planned at least three weeks in advance. There is also a podcast with Dr. Philip Bittihn in the works, which will be moderated by Eva Völker to promote the exchange between science and society.

Entry to the exhibition and the entire accompanying program is free, making it easier to access these valuable knowledge resources. The project is supported by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space as well as the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture.

The exhibition texts are provided in German and English in order to appeal to the broadest possible audience. A student advisory board from the fifth grade of the Felix-Klein-Gymnasium in Göttingen actively participated in the design of the exhibition, which helps to present the topics in a child-friendly and appealing way.
