MHH Hannover aims to become a university of excellence: 120 million euros in funding!
The Hannover Medical School (MHH) has taken a decisive step in its application for the title of University of Excellence. How MHH reported, an official declaration of intent was submitted to the Science Council. With this application, the MHH aims to further consolidate its position as Germany's leading medical university and to assert itself in the nationwide top research competition.
What is particularly noteworthy is that the MHH is the only purely medical university in Germany. President Prof. Dr. Denise Hilfiker-Kleiner emphasizes the high quality of research, teaching and patient care. The university is supported in this project by Lower Saxony's Science Minister Falko Mohrs, who emphasizes the importance of this application for the regional scientific landscape.
Research priorities and clusters of excellence
The MHH focuses on important research areas such as infection and immunity, transplantation and regeneration as well as biomedical engineering and implant research. According to information from The knowledge In May 2023, the university received funding for the clusters of excellence RESIST and Hearing4all. This cluster selection, which emerged from 98 applications, is intended to further strengthen research in Germany.
The RESIST team primarily works on advances in infection research, with a particular focus on neonatal sepsis and strategies to combat multi-resistant germs. At the same time, the Hearing4all hearing cluster aims to improve hearing diagnostics and treatment and to develop innovative, genetically based hearing aids.
Financing and long-term perspectives
The MHH will receive a total of 120 million euros in funding over a period of seven years to advance these research projects. This underlines the strategic importance of the clusters of excellence not only for the MHH, but also for Lower Saxony, as Science Minister Mohrs emphasizes.
The application for the University of Excellence must be submitted by November 12, 2025 and the decision will be made in fall 2026. Successful universities of excellence can expect annual funding of up to 15 million euros. This strategy, which the Excellence strategy aims to strengthen the international competitiveness of German universities and increase their visibility on the global science market.
As part of this strategy, universities of excellence are selected based on their quality and networking in research. The MHH is therefore positioning itself not only for a title, but also for long-term funding from scientific institutions, which is evaluated by international experts.
