MHH Central Pharmacy: Top training for pharmacy students awarded!

The Hannover Medical School (MHH) has received several important awards for its central pharmacy. The pharmacy was recently honored as a “recommended training pharmacy for 2024,” an award that was presented in May by the Federal Association of Pharmacy Students in Germany. The MHH central pharmacy took second place, which Dr. Gesine Picksak, one of the pharmacy managers, noted with joy. Four to five pharmacy students are trained here every year and have the opportunity to gain comprehensive insights into various departments of the pharmacy.

The training includes various areas such as the non-sterile, sterile and aseptic production of drugs, analytics, ward work, drug information and logistical processes. Interns are also required to create a project that is supervised by a mentor. This comprehensive training, in which all of the pharmacy's approximately 70 employees are actively involved, is based on the personal assessments of the pharmacy students, which reflect their experiences and the quality of the training.

Quality seal and further training

In addition, the MHH central pharmacy was awarded a quality seal by the Lower Saxony Chamber of Pharmacists. This makes it the first clinical pharmacy in Hanover to receive this important award. Different areas such as drug production and distribution, consulting, purchasing as well as research and teaching are evaluated. Dr. Heike Alz, the head of the central pharmacy, and her team worked intensively for two years to introduce a nationwide quality management system.

To implement the system, Axel Weiser, an employee and pharmaceutical technical assistant, took on the role of quality representative. As part of this, a manual was created that standardizes and documents numerous work steps in order to optimize work processes. All employees were actively involved, sometimes even outside of their regular working hours, to implement this system. Over the next three years, the defined work processes will be continuously reviewed and improved, with a new certificate only being awarded if the standards are raised further.

Importance of training quality

The awards not only illustrate the high demands placed on the pharmacy, but also the existing collaboration with young talent. Professor Dr. Reinhard Dengler, member of the MHH Presidium for Health Care, congratulated the employees on their successful certification and emphasized the relevance of high-quality training for the coming generation of pharmacists. The MHH central pharmacy is therefore not only an important training location, but also an example of excellent standards in the healthcare system. Further information about the awards and training in the MHH central pharmacy can be found on the MHH website available.
