New campus of the Hannover Medical School: Architecture of the future!
On March 19, 2025, it was announced that the renowned architectural firm HENN from Germany, in collaboration with C.F. Møller Architects from Denmark has been awarded the contract for the property planning services for the first construction phase of the new Hannover Medical School (MHH). This decision marks the beginning of a significant project in the heart of the Hannover Health Science Campus that focuses on modern healthcare architecture.
The collaboration between HENN and C.F. Møller has existed since 2016, with both offices specializing in innovative hospital projects. Special features of this cooperation are the inspiration from Scandinavian values as well as a clear focus on architectural quality, social aspects and efficient processes. C.F. Møller is particularly known in the industry for the concept of Healing Architecture, which will play an essential role in this project.
Design approach and sustainability
Maibritt Dammann, Associate Partner at C.F. Møller Architects, emphasizes the principles of adaptability and sustainability in architecture. The facade of the new clinic will be made of recycled aluminum and will be designed in a warm, red color to create a natural character. A base made of reused bricks will connect all buildings along the campus.
The comprehensive sustainability concept includes the use of recycled materials, unsealing areas and promoting biodiversity. The compact buildings will be constructed using a timber hybrid construction method, particularly on the upper floors intended for care areas. These approaches aim to consider both patient well-being and the environment.
Vision for the future
The MHH President, Professor Denise Hilfiker-Kleiner, emphasizes the essential link between research, teaching and health care, which should serve as an integration model. The new clinic building will not only be designed to be highly efficient, but also sustainable in order to do justice to the vision of the MHH as an excellent university.
The new campus will have a land area of 137,000 m² and a usable area of 46,600 m² in the first construction phase. The planned facilities include central emergency rooms, 24 operating rooms, intensive care units, clinical outpatient clinics, nursing rooms, staff facilities, laboratories, seminar rooms, administrative rooms and a helicopter landing pad. Completion of the first construction phase is targeted for 2031.
With this expansion of the Hannover Medical School, the project is positioning itself as a top center for academic medicine with an international profile. The collaboration between HENN and C.F. Drawing on a solid foundation of over 100 years of experience in healthcare architecture, Møller Architects promises to be a pioneering example of modern, empathetic patient care and efficient structures at the same time.
