Lower Saxony is celebrating: 120 million euros for the future of research!

On May 22, 2025, the Federal and State Excellence Commission announced the good news that the Hannover Medical School (MHH) together with its research networks RESIST and Hearing4all will receive funding of around 120 million euros. These funds are intended for the next seven years and provide a solid basis for innovative research projects at the MHH.

The MHH was active in the selection process with a total of three applications, two of which could now be funded. This makes it eligible to apply for the second funding line of the Excellence Strategy for a University of Excellence (ExU). Science Minister Falko Mohrs expressed his congratulations and emphasized the great importance of this funding for Lower Saxony as a science location.

Research objectives of the funded clusters

The Cluster of Excellence RESIST has set itself the goal of better understanding individual susceptibility to infections. Previous research successes include important topics such as sepsis in newborns, the SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and strategies to combat multi-resistant germs. Future plans include developing new infection models and using machine learning and artificial intelligence in data analysis.

Hearing4all focuses on improving the diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss. The measures also consider genetic approaches and AI systems to clarify sound sources. In addition, the social dimension is integrated by incorporating aspects such as multilingualism and social interactions into the research.

Overall overview of funding

A total of 70 clusters of excellence were selected from 98 applications submitted. This reflects the intense competition and the high demands of the Excellence Strategy, which is intended to strengthen Germany as a science location in international competition. The Excellence Strategy, which has existed since 2016, promotes the development of internationally competitive research fields at German universities and sharpens their profiles.

Cluster of Excellence Funding amount Research focus
RESIST About 66 million euros Infection research
Hearing4all About 54 million euros Diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss

The Cluster of Excellence Initiative is not the only news of the last few days. The University of Oldenburg has also reported successes: it received funding for three clusters of excellence, including a project that works closely with the MHH. The Excellence Strategy thus enables intensive collaboration between various institutions, which contributes to strengthening Germany as a science location.

In summary, it can be said that the opportunities created by these funds are of great importance both for the institutions involved and for the scientific community in Germany. The focus on interdisciplinary approaches shows that the challenges of the future are recognized and initiated.

The Excellence Strategy will therefore continue to play a key role in the development of German universities and their international visibility, supported by their financial resources and the possibility of permanent funding, which is evaluated every seven years. Overall, these measures are a vital step towards further increasing innovation and excellence in the German university landscape.
