Parking chaos at TU Braunschweig: New rules in sight!
On March 9, 2025, the Technical University of Braunschweig will shed light on current developments in the university and research landscape. The university has several projects in the works dedicated to both park management and artificial intelligence in the justice system.
The pressure on parking options around the university campuses is increasing. This is leading to a worrying increase in parking violations. Vehicles often park on grass verges and block not only sidewalks and cycle paths, but also fire department access and disabled parking spaces. In order to combat these problems, the university plans to increase punishment for violations in accordance with the TU house rules. In addition, a new parking space management concept is in the works, which is intended to take into account the increasing parking pressure magazin.tu-braunschweig.de reported.
Artificial intelligence in the judiciary
An important project at the university is the research network led by Prof. Anne Paschke, which is investigating the use of Large Language Models (LLM) in the justice system. The project entitled “Technological intelligence for the transformation, automation and user orientation of the justice system (TITAN)” receives funding of 1.5 million euros from the Daimler and Benz Foundation and includes the collaboration of seven universities. It should be noted that the use of artificial intelligence brings with it legal challenges, particularly with regard to judicial independence, as highlighted in literature on this topic, for example by Enders (2018) in his analysis of legal decision-making influenced by technologies, and in other works that address the limitations of legal tech, such as by Kahle (2022).
The importance of such technological developments is also underlined by current discussions in the legal world. The modalities of application and the legal framework are becoming increasingly important in order to prevent possible inconveniences when using these new technologies.
Other projects and events
In addition to the initiatives mentioned above, the Leichtweiß Institute for Hydraulic Engineering (LWI) is working with the Universidad Nacional Autonóma de México (UNAM) on a project to optimize flood management in Mexico. This project is supported by seed funding from both universities in order to achieve improved dam management.
Architecture students at TU Braunschweig, under the direction of Prof. Vanessa Miriam Carlow, are busy developing visions and urban development strategies for Potsdam's city center. Some of these designs will be presented in an exhibition at the Socio-Creative (R) Center in Potsdam from February 24th.
Another focus is on supporting researchers in dealing with hostility. A digital workshop will be offered on March 17th, organized by the BMBF, in which experts will offer support. Registrations for this are possible via a specific email address.
Overall, it can be seen that TU Braunschweig is pursuing a variety of initiatives to overcome current challenges and provide impetus for research and teaching.
