Rowing against cancer: Raising hope on the Maschsee with team spirit!
Last Saturday the “Rowing Against Cancer” charity regatta took place in the boathouse of the Hanover Rowing Club. This event attracted over 50 teams to the Maschsee, including patients, doctors, nursing staff, rowing athletes and rowing newcomers from local companies. The aim of the regatta was to make a strong statement against cancer and to mobilize the community to raise awareness of the challenges of cancer. The proceeds from the regatta flow into sports medicine at the Hannover Medical School (MHH) and support therapy support services in the oncology area.
The event was coordinated by the MHH Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC). The income is particularly important for supporting sports and exercise projects that support cancer patients in their prevention, sports therapy and rehabilitation. The participation of two groups from the ActiveOncoKids network, consisting of young cancer patients (15-19 years old) from the MHH, showed the commitment to strengthening the self-confidence and joy of life of these young people after cancer therapy.
Commitment in the region
The regatta took place not only with the support of the MHH, but also in cooperation with the Living with Cancer Foundation and the Hannoversche Regattaverband e.V. Participation in the event was possible even for those who had no rowing knowledge, as local rowing clubs provided preparation options. This enabled a broad public to actively participate in the event and provide support for those who were sick.
Supporting program and additional offers during the regatta ensured a successful atmosphere. In addition to competitions on the water, there were also interviews and information stands that further reinforced the commitment against cancer. The event was significantly supported by the Association for Children with Cancer Hannover e.V., whose participation was crucial to the success of the regatta.
Deeper insights into movement therapy
The role of sport and exercise in cancer therapy is becoming increasingly important. According to experts from the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT) Heidelberg, targeted sports and exercise therapies are not only important for physical fitness, but also for the psychological well-being of those affected. Studies show that regular exercise during and after cancer treatment can significantly improve the quality of life. The “Rowing Against Cancer” regatta is an example of this integrative approach, which shapes how we deal with the disease NCT Heidelberg reported.
The event not only offered a sporting setting, but also the opportunity for those affected, relatives and supporters to exchange ideas and network. A big thank you goes to the many helpers, sponsors and supporters, without whom such an event would not have been possible.
