University of Göttingen receives platinum label for health promotion!
The University of Göttingen recently received the FISU Healthy Campus Label in platinum. This award is presented by the Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) and recognizes the university's comprehensive commitment to health promotion, sustainability and well-being. The certificate was officially presented at the FISU World Conference in Bochum. The university went through the extensive certification process in summer 2024, coordinated by the Central Institution for Sport and Health (ZESG).
Dr. Valérie Schüller, Vice President for Finance and Human Resources, emphasized the central role of health in the university culture. The University of Göttingen offers a variety of programs to promote physical and mental health. This includes sports and exercise offerings, mental health support, resilience promotion, stress management and information on healthy eating. Another important aspect is sustainable campus development, which aims at mobility, quality of life and ecological responsibility.
Health and sustainability in focus
The FISU Healthy Campus Label is based on a holistic concept that includes not only physical activity, but also mental health, nutritional promotion, environmental responsibility, social integration, disease prevention and sustainable development. The evaluation is carried out by independent experts, and the participation of the University of Göttingen was supported by the General German University Sports Association (adh).
The FISU Healthy Campus program was launched by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The aim of the program is to improve the health and well-being of students and employees at universities. It is based on a digital platform that enables tracking and improvement of health conditions and includes a network of 30 student health experts.
The program is not only a response to the challenges that many young adults face during their studies, but it also aims to stop the trend that puts students' health at risk. The initiative expands FISU's social responsibility and sees itself as a bridge to reach more students and universities.
International networking and benefits
Universities that participate in the FISU Healthy Campus program benefit from several benefits. This includes, among other things, learning best practices from other universities, promoting collaboration between different departments and improving the image through international certification. They also help reduce the dropout rate and promote the quality of life on campus. These successes also correlate with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which positively influences placement in university rankings.
Parallel to the efforts of the University of Göttingen, the University of Tübingen is also pursuing similar goals. This was also recently awarded the FISU Healthy Campus label. Ingrid Arzberger, who heads university sports and the “SGM BeTaBalance” project, emphasizes the need for sustainable promotion of well-being. The “Wellbeing@Uni Tübingen” project will be implemented in 2024-2025 and aims to strengthen the well-being of all members of the university.
The initiative is supported by several institutions, including the Competence Center for Sustainable Development (KuNaH) and the Company and Student Health Management. Thanks to the certification, Tübingen can now also benefit from the international Healthy Campus network. A new website “Wellbeing@Uni Tübingen” will be launched in the winter semester of 2024/25, which will make existing offers and initiatives more visible.
