University of Göttingen: Strong result in the global ranking 2025!

The current Shanghai Ranking, also known as the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), published on September 3, 2025, analyzed over 2,500 universities worldwide. The University of Göttingen achieved a respectable ranking and shares the ranking between 6th and 11th place in Germany with the universities of Frankfurt, Cologne, Mainz, Münster and Tübingen. The evaluation of this ranking is based on key metrics. The universities are ranked based, among other things, on the number of publications and citations in international science magazines. The number of Nobel Prize winners and the so-called Highly Cited Researchers are also included in the overall evaluation. Further details are available on the website ShanghaiRanking to find.

Ranking by subject

Looking back at the methodology of the Shanghai Ranking, a global university ranking has been published since 2009, which has been supplemented by the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) since 2017. This evaluation covers universities in 55 subjects, categorized into five broad areas: natural sciences, engineering, life sciences, medical sciences and social sciences. GRAS uses objective academic indicators to evaluate performance, with five main dimensions taken into account: the excellence of the faculty, the quality of research, research influence, international exchange and the quantity of published work.
