University of Hildesheim starts the winter semester with 1,178 first semester students!
For the winter semester 2025/26, the University of Hildesheim welcomes 1,178 bachelor's and 560 master's students as first semester students. A total of 7,896 students enrolled at the university - including exchange and further education students as well as doctoral students - include: 4,955 bachelor's and 2,608 master's students. President Prof. Dr. May-Britt Kallenrode encouraged the new students to actively participate in the university community and to help shape democracy.
The introductory week offers a varied program aimed at discovering the city and campus and getting to know important tools and institutions. Particularly noteworthy is the central student advisory service (ZSB), which offers an open Q&A at the start of your studies and distributes information flyers with contact points and a map. This is intended to make it easier for new students to get started.
Student structure and gender distribution
Of the current 7,896 students at the University of Hildesheim, 5,412 are female, 2,387 are male and 90 are diverse or without gender information. The origin of the first semester students is also noteworthy, with Lower Saxony representing the strongest federal state with 1,308 students. North Rhine-Westphalia follows with 90 and Baden-Württemberg with 33 first semester students. The new students also include 924 international students who contribute to the university's international diversity.
DAAD Prize 2025 to Humay Abbasli
A special highlight of the events is the presentation of the DAAD Prize 2025, which was awarded to Humay Abbasli from Azerbaijan in the Master Data Analytics course. The prize is endowed with 1,000 euros and recognizes his outstanding academic achievements and his social commitment. Not only did Abbasli achieve an impressive grade point average of 1.34, but he also showed great initiative by supporting exchange students and working as a student assistant at the Department of Computer Science. Prof. Dr. Dr. Lars Schmidt-Thieme praises his commitment and the excellent quality of his services.
Engagement of international students
An inspiring story among international students is that of Marlon Luis Castro Alfonso. In 2014 he came to Germany for a language course and decided to study business administration in Stendal. After completing his bachelor's degree, he is now pursuing a master's degree in risk management. Castro is characterized by outstanding academic achievements and critical contributions to discussions. His commitment is also evident in various committees at the university, including the business council and the student council. He has been supporting new international students in the buddy program for four years, actively encouraging their participation in university events and supporting the business department in planning new study programs and organizing school visits.
All student numbers mentioned are provisional. The final figures are expected to be published in December 2025. While the University of Hildesheim prepares for new challenges and emerging talent, it remains a place of knowledge and international diversity.
