Universities in focus: places of democracy and innovation!

The week at the Technical University of Braunschweig was characterized by important events and exciting developments that shed light on the role of universities in society. Particularly noteworthy is this University Chancellors’ Conference, which took place on September 18th and 19th. The main theme of the conference was “Universities – Places of Democracy”. In this context, the participants discussed the importance of universities as centers of democratic culture and their responsibility for analyzing and improving social processes.

The Universities are not only educational institutions, but also places of free exchange that are actively committed to combating discrimination and racism. Many institutions promote dialogue between science and citizens in order to strengthen social cohesion. In this context, it is relevant that universities have the right to self-government and are democratically organized. There are efforts to promote participation within academic processes.

Research and innovation

Another highlight is the Research on itaconate, a promising molecule that is being investigated by a team at TU Braunschweig. The results of this research were published in the renowned journal “Nature Metabolism”. The findings could enable significant advances in the treatment of inflammatory diseases.

In addition, the “EWAZ-Transfer” project sets new standards in the areas of energy, flood protection and drinking water safety. Existing mining cavities and dams in the Harz are used here.

Prof. Ingo Ott also achieved significant academic success with the Elsevier Award was awarded in Paris. His work in bioorganometallic chemistry includes research into organometallic compounds to combat cancer and infectious diseases.

Funding opportunities and awards

A key theme of the week was the upcoming Information event on the Feodor Lynen research scholarship, which takes place online on September 23rd. This scholarship is aimed at postdocs and experienced researchers from Germany who want to pursue international research projects. The Humboldt Foundation supports these projects and attaches great importance to a balanced gender ratio. Applications are welcome from people of all ethnic, cultural or social backgrounds.

In addition, the student house at TU Braunschweig has been recognized for its architectural qualities, with awards such as “Nike for Education” and the special “Debut Work of the Year” award from the Iconic Awards 2025. This underlines the importance of architecture for higher education and study conditions.

There were also numerous events, including: DLR_Uni_Summer_School, which took place from September 8th to 12th. It offered students from all over Germany practical research flights.

The week was also marked by one Conference on mathematics on September 25th, which addresses teachers from Lower Saxony, as well as a “nugget of knowledge” on the topic of communication in teaching, which was presented on September 29th by Dr. Florian Leydecker is directed.

With events and new programs, the TU Braunschweig offers a platform for knowledge exchange and promotes dialogue in the academic community. These developments demonstrate the rich variety of opportunities available to students and researchers at the university.
