Future Explorer Day in Clausthal: Scientific highlights for students!

On June 19, 2025, the Clausthal University of Technology will open the Future Discovery Day on its campus at Leibnizstrasse 4. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., school classes and courses are invited to take part in this special event. The event offers, among other things, the science fun show with science magician Oliver Grammel as well as exciting experimental lectures. The magic show takes place at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. and lasts 45 minutes each. Entry is free.

Science Day took place yesterday and focused on innovations in the circular economy. Around 130 guests gathered in the auditorium to follow the central discussion on the topic of “The Circular Economy and the Common Good”. The main sponsors were the GMH Group and Salzgitter AG, represented by Jürgen Großmann, Dr. Alexander Becker, Birgit Potrafki and Dr. Stefan Mecke. The keynote speech was given by Christian Felber, a university professor and author. Prof. Roland Menges moderated a panel discussion that attracted around 150 people and opened up new perspectives on the circular economy.

Challenges and opportunities

The current discussion about the circular economy is part of a broader change that is necessary for Germany. According to a recent report, the industry faces several challenges, including high energy prices, labor costs and taxes, as well as excessive bureaucracy and a shortage of skilled workers. These points illustrate the need for future-proof and competitive location conditions. In order to overcome the challenges, innovations, clever ideas and good strategies are required.

A central aspect is the important raw materials of the future: smart data and artificial intelligence (AI). In addition, the Circular Economy Initiative Germany (CEID) aims to develop a roadmap for a sustainable circular economy. Representatives from business, science and civil society are coming together to develop a sustainable alternative to the current linear economy, which comes with high costs for people and the environment, including climate change and pollution.

The role of the circular economy

The concept of the circular economy aims to optimize and, if possible, close material and energy cycles. Necessary changes along the entire value chain are discussed. The initiative involves various actors and examines specific use cases and their implementation. The project receives support from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, with acatech – German Academy of Engineering Sciences taking the lead. Under the leadership of Thomas Weber, Vice President of acatech, we are working on a common goal for Germany.

With the FutureDiscovererDay in Clausthal and the ongoing discussions about the circular economy, it is clear that education, innovation and collaboration are the keys to overcoming the challenges of today and securing a sustainable future. With its events, Clausthal University of Technology sets an example for its commitment in these areas.

In summary, it can be said that the challenges for Germany as an industrial location and the implementation of circular economy concepts are directly related. How handelsblatt.com and circular-economy-initiative.de show, the focus must be on innovations in order to enable successful change in the long term. The events at TU Clausthal are a step in this direction.

The commitment of the actors and the active participation of interested parties are crucial for the transformation into a sustainable future.
