60 years of the Ruhr University Bochum: Ceremony and portraits wanted!

On June 20, 2025, the Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) will celebrate its 60th anniversary with a colorful ceremony that extends across the entire university campus. The ceremonial opening of the university took place in the theater on June 30, 1965. Not only were the milestones of the past six decades honored, but the present and future of the educational institution were also examined. How news.rub.de reported that numerous visitors took the opportunity to explore the university's diverse offerings.

On June 18, 2025, the exhibition “Built to change since 1965” opened, depicting the innovative and dynamic nature of the RUB. This exhibition shows the development of the university and its diverse facets. During the celebrations, the weather held true to the promise of a bright summer day, adding to the positive mood. The campus celebration included special stands organized by student councils and the AStA to provide interactive insights into university life.

Special personalities in focus

For the RUB anniversary, all faculties are invited to submit portraits of outstanding graduates. These “changemakers” have initiated significant changes in science and society through their remarkable careers or their social commitment. The selected portraits are intended to serve as role models and will be presented in a picture gallery on the RUB news portal. On rub60.ruhr-uni-bochum.de Further information on the necessary procedure can be found. Faculty and members of the university are invited to contact suitable alumni and make their stories visible.

Encountering these impressive lives will further strengthen the RUB's identity as a place of inspiring education. This honor is not only a reflection of great achievements, but also an incentive for current and future generations of students to also excel.

Universities in transition

The introduction of the RUB into the context of German university history represents a significant development. This history goes back to the Middle Ages and was strongly influenced by the universities in Paris and Bologna. As the bpb.de describes, universities at that time were supposed to act as self-regulating institutions and were authorized to award academic degrees.

The German higher education system is currently reflecting an evolutionary phase that is characterized by challenges and reform approaches. In particular, the Bologna Declaration of 1999 and the following reforms had far-reaching effects on the structure of degrees, the internationalization of universities and the quality of teaching. Today, universities are independent actors in society that have to react more flexibly to changing social and political requirements.

With a view to the future of the RUB and the German university landscape, it remains to be seen how developments will develop. But the current ceremony impressively shows that tradition and innovation can go hand in hand.
