Application for a second degree course

Another important aspect concerns the application for a second degree at the University of Siegen. Applicants who are aiming for a second bachelor's or master's degree are considered second degree applicants. A master's degree that builds on the bachelor's degree does not count as a second degree, but is classified as a “consecutive degree.”

In courses with restricted admission, only 3% of the available study places are available for second degree applicants. These study places are not awarded based on average grades or waiting times, but are based on a so-called measurement number. This consists of the examination results of the first degree and a justification for the second degree.

Study fees at a glance

They are also a central topic Second course fees, which pose a challenge to many prospective students. Although tuition fees were abolished in Germany in 1970, they were reintroduced in 2005. The legislative authority for this lies with the federal states.

Currently, students in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Rhineland-Palatinate have to pay tuition fees for their second degree, which can amount to up to 650 euros per semester, in addition to the general semester fees. These contributions consist of enrollment fees, administration costs, a semester ticket and social contributions.

In certain cases, a waiver of second course fees can be applied for, for example if the job requires two completed courses or if the first course of study can no longer be pursued for health reasons. In addition, long-term study fees apply in several federal states if the standard period of study is exceeded by more than five semesters.

The application deadlines for second degree applicants are identical to those for first degree applicants, and the required documents are also comparable. In addition to proof of your first degree, a written justification for your desire to study a second degree is necessary in order to clearly explain your individual reasons.

Overall, it is clear that both the award for outstanding academic achievements and the complexity of applying for a second degree program and the associated fees at the University of Siegen are of great importance for many students.
