Bochum is preparing for the FISU World University Games 2025!

On May 21, 2025 Ines Lenze nominated as delegation leader for the German delegation at the upcoming Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games. Lenze, who heads Bochum university sports, has already made a significant contribution to the organization of this important sporting event. These multi-sport games represent one of the largest undertakings in the world and attract around 150 nations with around 10,000 participants. The games will take place from July 16 to 27, 2025 in the Rhine-Ruhr region and Berlin.

The FISU World University Games, once known as the Universiade, is the largest multi-sport event after the Olympic and Paralympic Games. This is the first time since 1989 that Germany is hosting this prestigious event. Authorities expect around 10,000 athletes and officials from 170 countries to compete for medals in 18 sports.

Significance of the event

The General German University Sports Association (adh) plans to send the largest delegation in the history of the FISU World University Games with around 500 people. Ines Lenze played a key role in the bidding process to host the Games, and her experience in elite international student sport will be a valuable resource for the entire delegation. She will receive support from two colleagues from Dortmund and Lüneburg, who work together with an extensive organizational and office team.

A central goal of the German delegation under Lenze is to create the best conditions for the student national team and at the same time to present a cosmopolitan host country. The Ruhr University Bochum plays an important role in this context, as it is one of the most active universities in Germany as a partner university for top-class sports.

Competitions and location

The FISU World University Games 2025 events will take place in several cities in the Rhine-Ruhr region to offer participants an exciting competitive environment. The cities of Bochum, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Essen and Mülheim an der Ruhr are the venues that will host numerous competitions over a period of twelve days.

FISU works closely with local partners to organize the games. FISU.tv will also cover the event with live streams and video-on-demand, while accreditation for journalists and officials is already possible. FISU expects international coverage, including voices from ten countries, including New Zealand, Nigeria, South Korea and Turkey.

When she was nominated, Ines Lenze expressed her enthusiasm for the responsibility and the challenge it entailed. She is ready to make a significant contribution to the success of the FISU World University Games 2025 and to sustainably promote university sport in Germany. With her years of experience in university sports, she will help strengthen and promote international exchange as part of this important event.
