Bochum in focus: FISU World University Games 2025 are getting started!

On April 10, 2025, a decisive chapter in the history of university sports was opened at the Ruhr University Bochum. The university became an official partner university of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games chosen to host an important international competition in just a few weeks.

The event, considered the largest multi-sport event of the year, will bring together around 8,500 students and officials from around 150 countries. Athletes will compete in 18 different disciplines over a period of twelve days. Bochum will be one of the central venues.

The cooperation agreement

On April 8, 2025, the Ruhr University Bochum signed an important cooperation agreement that establishes the comprehensive cooperation between the university and the FISU Games. Rector Prof. Dr. Martin Paul expressed his anticipation of the event and emphasized the university's commitment to sport. He spoke of the partnership as a central element in organizing the Games.

With the signing of the contract, the role of the Vice Rector for Teaching and Studies, Prof. Dr. Kornelia Freitag, highlighted. She emphasized the benefits for students who can take part in the event and become volunteers or ambassadors. This role is not only an opportunity to expand your skills, but can also be recognized as an internship.

The role of volunteers

Working as a volunteer offers students the opportunity to gain valuable practical experience. These activities can be credited as an internship with 2 to 5 credit points (CP) in accordance with the examination regulations. Students who take part in volunteer work must ensure that they deregister from exams in good time if the activity conflicts with their course of study.

The feedback and positive response to the volunteer program are promising. The managing director of the FISU Games, Niklas Börger, also described the partnership as a crucial building block for the success of the games. The cooperation will focus in particular on media, marketing and ticketing in order to carry out the event smoothly.

Torch relay and university sports

Another highlight is that the Ruhr University of Bochum will be the stage location for the torch relay of the World University Games on May 8, 2025. This event will not only intensify anticipation for the games, but also promote college sports in the region. Ines Lenze, head of university sports in Bochum, emphasized the importance of cooperation to strengthen university sports.

The FISU Games not only offer a platform for sporting achievements, but also opportunities for social projects in sport, such as those that arise as part of volunteer activities. Such commitments often focus on supporting disadvantaged children and young people who are often underrepresented in society. Sport is used as an important tool to promote social skills and cohesion and to support problem solving.
