Clear the stage for ALMAS” and SELVA”: dance skills conquer Essen!

On Tuesday, June 24, 2025, the Folkwang dance evening will celebrate its premiere in the New Aula on the Essen-Werden campus. Three premieres will be shown, which were developed by students at the Folkwang University of the Arts in collaboration with renowned choreographers. This evening is a significant highlight for all B.A. dance students.

Maya M. Carroll, who works with third-year students, is responsible for the piece “ALMAS”. Her choreography addresses themes such as loss, compassion and memory. Carroll brings over 18 years of experience creating her own work and founded the ensemble “The Instrument” in 2011. Her pieces are known for expressing human conditions in an intimate and universal way.

Creative processes and inspiring topics

The final project “SELVA” was choreographed by Stephanie Thiersch. The fourth-year dancers immerse themselves in the vibrant matter of nature by adopting the movements of dead and living substances as well as plants and elements. Thiersch, who as founder and artistic director of the MOUVOIR company has developed over 50 stage plays, films and installations, aims with this project to create a community on stage from which the individual dancers can emerge. A piece by Professor Rodolpho Leoni, who has been responsible for modern dance at Folkwang University since 2006, will also be presented.

The Folkwang dance evening opens on June 24th at 7:30 p.m.; further performances will take place on June 25th, 26th and 27th at 7:30 p.m. The tickets are available at a price of 15.00 euros (reduced 8 euros) via the Folkwang ticket hotline, by email or at the box office.

Training for the future of dance

The B.A. dance degree program offers comprehensive training in the artistic and pedagogical areas. The course lasts eight semesters and ends with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). The aim is to train well-informed, critical and passionate artists. Classes are taught in English and include elements of contemporary stage dance, performance and contemporary dance pedagogy.

The fourth year of study focuses on the transition into the professional dance world.
