The research explorers start: International career opportunities in the Ruhr area!

The Research Explorer Ruhr will take place from June 22 to July 5, 2025, an important event that attracts international early careers, especially prospective and early postdocs. Organized by the Research Academy Ruhr, the event aims to get to know the research landscape of the Ruhr University Alliance and the Ruhr area as a living and working area. Participants have the opportunity to clarify their research compatibility with professors and explore prospects for extended postdoctoral stays.

The participation of 28 international guests from 14 different countries has been confirmed by the registration deadline on June 27, 2025. The program offers participants a comprehensive immersion in the German science system and the exploration of funding landscapes and career paths. What is particularly remarkable is the doubling of international guests compared to the previous year, as Simon Kresmann from the University of Duisburg-Essen notes. Over 30 professors are available as hosts.

Highlights of the program

A central element of the event is the Global Young Faculty Event, which will take place on June 30, 2025 at the College for Social Sciences and Humanities in Essen. Under the topic “Opportunities for international mobility in science” Dr. Mark Halawa-Sarholz and a keynote speech by Prof. Dr. Liudvika Leišytė from the Technical University of Dortmund will moderate the panel discussion. Several professors from different departments will also be present on this day to share their experiences and perspectives.

The distribution of participants across the universities is as follows:

university Number of participants
University of Duisburg-Essen 10
Technical University of Dortmund 6
Ruhr University Bochum 10

The program also requires applicants to first select a professor from a profile provided. These profiles will be made available starting January 6, 2024. Applications must comply with certain conditions, including uploading an academic CV and publication list via the Sciebo service, with file names in a specified format.

Challenges of international mobility

An important aspect of international science is migration. The DFG highlights that scientists from abroad or with a migration background are confronted with challenges such as cultural differences, language barriers and legal barriers to immigration. These factors can lead to significant career delays.

To meet these challenges, the DFG not only promotes migration in science, but also offers individual advice and support for researchers. An English-language website provides information on funding procedures, and applications can also be submitted in English.

The Research Explorer Ruhr initiative aims to address these challenges and create sustainable collaborations that will have an impact beyond the event. Ultimately, a network should be established that promotes international exchange in science.
