Diversity Day 2025: Racism in focus at the Ruhr-University Bochum!
On May 7th, 2025, the Ruhr University Bochum announces that the fourth Diversity Day will take place on May 27th and 28th, 2025. The focus of this event is the important topic of racism. The Diversity Day is aimed at students, employees and university members and is intended to provide a space for discussion and exchange.
The opening of Diversity Day begins on May 27th at 10:30 a.m. in the foyer of the university administration. The event starts with a diversity dialogue attended by Prof. Dr. Isolde Karle, Vice Rector for Diversity, Inclusion and Talent Development, takes part. A highlight of the first day will be the Walk of Diversity, which will take place at the forum in front of the university library. Various stands on diversity topics will be set up here.
Workshops and panel discussions
In addition, a workshop is offered that deals with clarifying racism and intersectional discrimination. This workshop aims to develop options for action and promote networking. The lecture by Prof. Dr. begins on May 28th. Lorenz Narku Laing at 12.45 p.m., which deals with the topic of “Racism from an intersectional perspective”.
After the lecture there will be a panel discussion that addresses racism and anti-Semitism in everyday life and discusses possible countermeasures. Workshops from 3:30 p.m. deal with empowerment for people of color, anti-Muslim racism and everyday racism. Participation in all events is possible without registration and is expressly encouraged. In addition, all lectures and discussions will be broadcast online.
Special workshops for BIPoC FLINTA*
A special workshop led by Jasmin Mouissi will take place online via Zoom on May 27th from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. This workshop is specifically designed for BIPoC FLINTA* (Black, Indigenous, People of Color, Women, Lesbian, Intersex, Non-Binary and Trans people). Here the focus is on experiences with racism and intersectional discrimination.
The workshop creates a protected space for exchange and reflection with the aim of strengthening individual and collective resistance to racism. The focus is on topics such as exchanging experiences, gaining clarity about racism and developing options for action. Participants have the opportunity to explore resources for resistance and self-empowerment and to network.
Jasmin Mouissi brings extensive experience in the areas of empowerment, criticism of racism and power, and critical whiteness. Their approach is intersectional and offers needs- and process-oriented offers to support those affected.
Overall, Diversity Day at the Ruhr University Bochum promises to be an important platform for discussions about racism and diversity. The initiative is a step towards greater understanding and empathy within the university community and beyond.
