These attacks can open smart home doors without authorization or prevent car doors from closing. With the topic “Spatial-Domain Wireless Jamming with Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces”, the paper was presented at the cybersecurity conference “Network & Distributed System Security (NDSS) Symposium”, which took place on February 25, 2025 in San Diego, USA.

Of particular concern are jamming attacks, where jamming signals overshadow legitimate communications, resulting in a denial of service to users. These attacks represent a significant security threat and demonstrate the urgent need to defend against such threats.

Growing Threat of Jamming Attacks

In North America, over a third of homes are protected by video doorbells or other Wi-Fi-dependent devices. Still, there are growing concerns about the threat of Wi-Fi jammers. These devices can neutralize the security monitoring of smart home systems. Jamming devices are now cheap and easily available online, making it easier for criminals to use the technology. The Los Angeles Police Department warned in March 2023 of an increase in such burglaries. Police report that radio interference signal interception, also known as deauthing, targets security devices. It is alarming that the majority of break-ins in North America occur without electronic sophistication, underscoring the importance of visible security systems as a deterrent measure.

Measures to protect smart home systems

To ensure the security of smart home devices, it is crucial to consider robust security monitoring and signal redundancy features when selecting a security system. Systems with a cellular backhaul feature are particularly beneficial in the event the Wi-Fi network fails. Considering vendors that provide regular software updates and actively patch vulnerabilities can also make a critical difference in system security.

Newer security products from companies like Ring and SimpliSafe already offer jamming detection features. Experts also recommend implementing redundant systems, using robust Wi-Fi passwords, and conducting regular device scans. Visible security signs can reduce the chance of a break-in by up to 50%, which can lead to a better feeling of security.
