Düsseldorf launches innovative master programs for the energy transition!

On August 7, 2025, Oliver Krischer, the Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Transport of North Rhine-Westphalia, visited the EUREF Talent Campus in Düsseldorf. The motto of the visit was: “Training, future ideas and innovations under one roof – the energy transition on site in Düsseldorf.” Krischer obtained detailed information about the new, international and practical master's programs that are being developed in a real-world laboratory for the energy transition.

The Talent Campus, a project in collaboration with the Ruhr University Alliance and leading companies in the energy and mobility sector, will offer the first two English-language master's degree programs from the winter semester of 2025/26: “Management of Smart and Sustainable Energy Systems” and “Sustainable Energy and Hydrogen Infrastructures”. Further programs are planned until 2028 that focus on sustainable buildings and logistics solutions.

Interdisciplinarity and practical relevance

The new courses are characterized by their interdisciplinary orientation. They combine technology, management and sustainability strategies to meet the challenges of the 21st century such as climate change, loss of biodiversity and scarcity of resources. This illustrates how important it is to take a comprehensive view of the energy system that combines technical innovations with social and ecological aspects.

As part of the ministerial visit, a meeting between Krischer and representatives of companies and the EUREF (European Energy Forum) also took place. The EUREF Campus concept has been active for ten years, with TU Berlin students working on green hydrogen production and renewable energy storage options. A new EUREF campus in North Rhine-Westphalia will open in 2024 and, similar to the existing campus in Berlin, aims to network business and science.

Involvement in educational initiatives

Interdisciplinary training is also promoted at the European University of Flensburg and the Flensburg University of Applied Sciences. A master's degree program entitled “Sustainable Energy” is offered there, which holistically deals with the energy system as a social-ecological challenge. Students work intensively on projects that develop innovative approaches to designing sustainable energy systems and address the challenges of the current energy system.

The course at the Center for Sustainable Energy Systems (ZNES) at the European University of Flensburg involves experts from various disciplines in order to develop practical solutions and integrate current research projects into the training. This shows the growing importance of practical experience and interdisciplinary collaboration in the training of future specialists in the energy sector.

In summary, it can be said that the developments at the EUREF Talent Campus and in Flensburg represent a strong sign of the future direction of education in the field of energy. Training, which aims to combine technical knowledge with a strong focus on sustainability, is critical to addressing the challenges society faces related to climate change.
