Discover the fascinating world of artificial intelligence in Bielefeld!

In the knowledge workshop city of Bielefeld, the autumn holidays are all about artificial intelligence (AI). As part of the BRILLIANT, a series of events on “AI and us”, a diverse program awaits visitors. From September 6th to November 30th, 2025, over 50 formats and more than 300 dates will be offered by Bielefeld University, Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences and other partners, including workshops, exhibitions and science shows. The majority of events are free and accessible without registration.

Particular highlights are the over 20 workshops and events aimed at children, young people and families. For example, the “Fiddle Afternoon Special” takes place four times and is aimed at children aged 3 and over. A “Clothes Make Robots” workshop for young people aged 14 and over offers creative ways to use technology. Main topics such as “Robots as personal helpers” on November 11th and species protection via app on October 18th and 23rd illustrate how AI can be integrated into various areas of life.

Interactive formats and ethical questions

The GENIALE not only aims to impart knowledge, but also to actively discuss social questions and ethical challenges in the context of AI. At a time when AI is increasingly being integrated into our daily lives, issues such as data protection, loss of autonomy and responsibility for incorrect decisions made by AI systems are particularly relevant. Current studies show that these challenges affect both science and society and require an interdisciplinary approach to develop solutions.

An interactive course entitled “I AM A.I.”, which can be seen in the Wissenwerkstadt until the end of October, invites participants to explore the opportunities and limits of AI. Visitors can also take part in events such as the science speed dating on sustainable AI (October 11th) or the live podcast recording on social filter bubbles (October 18th). These formats not only promote understanding of AI technologies, but also reflection on their ethical implications.

Future of GENIALE and social integration

Since opening in September 2024, GENIALE has recorded almost 160,000 visits. In the future, the series of events will be offered annually in autumn on changing topics, with the UNESCO principles on AI development always in focus. The GENIALE also aims to raise awareness of the challenges associated with the use of AI technologies. Fair and transparent decisions as well as the respectful handling of data play a central role.

The significant ethical issues surrounding AI development include transparency, accountability and the avoidance of bias in AI tools. In order to do justice to these questions, the participation of various stakeholders from education, science and society is essential. Further research approaches focus on the development of guidelines and standards that take into account both technological progress and ethical principles. The aim is to exploit the opportunities offered by AI and at the same time minimize potential risks in order to ensure responsible use of the technologies.
