Experience the wonders of quantum physics: exciting events in Bochum!

The last week of March 2025 will be dominated by exciting events at the Faculty of Physics and Astronomy at the Ruhr University Bochum. A wide range of topics will be presented over three consecutive days, appealing to both experts and laypeople. The highlights are the “Saturday Morning Physics” event, the “Astronomy Day” and the humorous physics musical “PLANETAMOS”.

The “Saturday Morning Physics” event opens on March 22, 2025 at 11 a.m. in the Pauluskirche in Bochum with the topic “Quantum Dots: The Source of Fascinating Quantum Light”. Dr. Arne Ludwig will be a speaker explaining the basics of quantum physics. The event is the last date in this series in the winter semester 24/25, which extends over several Saturdays. Before the lecture begins at 10:30 a.m. there will be coffee and waffles offered by the student council. Admission is free and the Evangelical Church Community of Bochum is cooperating in organizing this event.

A day for astronomy

Another highlight is the “Astronomy Day”, which will take place on March 29, 2025 on the campus of the Astronomical Institute. Beginning at 10:50 a.m., visitors can enjoy guided tours of the observatory as well as fascinating activities such as the partial solar eclipse, which can be viewed using telescopes. Guests also have the opportunity to experience Jupiter and Mars at dusk.

Physics meets entertainment

On the same day as “Astronomy Day”, the physics musical “PLANETAMOS” will be performed at the Ruhr University. The humorous show with demonstration experiments, music and singing will take place on March 29th at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. and on March 30th at 10:30 a.m. in the HIA lecture hall. To take part in this special event, a free and binding registration is required.

The exhibition in the new Knowledge Forum at the University of Göttingen shows a connection to quantum mechanics in a broader context. This revolves around Göttingen's significant contributions to the development of quantum mechanics 100 years ago, including through physicists such as Werner Heisenberg, Max Born and Pascual Jordan. The exhibition also includes a supporting program with workshops, musical readings and popular science lectures to make this complex topic easier to access.

Interest in quantum physics is increasing as modern technologies such as MRI machines, smartphones and even supermarket checkout systems are based on quantum mechanical principles. The contribution of the German Physical Society (DPG) to this area of knowledge is just as important; it promotes the transfer of knowledge and supports young scientists in the natural sciences, and has done so since its founding in 1845.

In summary, the last week of March 2025 in Bochum and Göttingen will be characterized by an exciting program that brings together both scientific findings and social aspects. The events offer both educational institutions and the general public an opportunity to engage with the fascinating world of physics.
