Welcome to the first semester 2025: A new beginning at the University of Cologne!
The first semester welcome will take place at the University of Cologne on April 7, 2025. Around 1,100 new students will start an exciting summer semester. This event will be offered both in person and as a live stream in order to provide access to as many interested parties as possible. Greetings from the university management are presented by Rector Professor Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee and the Vice Rector for Teaching and Studies, Professor Dr. Beatrix Busse, delivered. The board of the General Student Committee (AStA) will also be present. A video message from Cologne Mayor Henriette Reker is also expected.
In his speech, the Rector highlighted the diversity of subjects and disciplines at the university and emphasized the importance of interdisciplinarity and internationality. Students are encouraged to contact other universities and academic institutions worldwide, particularly in Europe and the five foreign offices in Egypt, China, Ghana, India and the USA.
Information and offers on Albertus-Magnus-Platz
The first semester welcome is accompanied by an information fair on Albertus-Magnus-Platz. Here new students have the opportunity to find out about central university and student institutions. Offers such as university sports, the studio stage and university radio are on the program. The gateway start-up center in the “InnoDom” will also promote start-up ideas among students.
The University of Cologne has around 40,000 students enrolled for the 2025 summer semester, of which around 25,300, or around 63%, are women. There are also around 4,400 international students, which makes up around 11% of the total. Such statistics emphasize the international and diverse structure of the student body.

In addition to welcoming new students, there are a number of scientific surveys and studies that continually examine the study and living situation at universities in Germany. For example, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) collects comprehensive data on the social and economic situation of students, which is important for the further development of university policy. This data is of great relevance in reports and scientific publications, is constantly updated and aims to improve educational monitoring in Germany.
The University of Cologne looks forward to welcoming the new students and making their start to their academic career as pleasant as possible. Further information is available on the website University of Cologne available.
