Essen Science Summer: Discover new avenues of research!
On May 26, 2025, the Essen Science Summer invites you to an exciting journey of discovery into the world of science. This event, organized by the city of Essen and the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE), lasts two and a half weeks. The aim of the science summer is to make knowledge tangible and to offer everyone interested a platform to deal with various scientific topics. Registration for the program offerings is now possible online, which enables early planning.
Highlights of the science summer
The highlights include the science evening on June 10th, which will take place in the glass pavilion on the UDE campus in Essen. At 5 p.m., Mayor Thomas Kufen and Prof. Dr. Stefan Rumann will give interesting short lectures on topics that are important for the future. These include the influence of water research on quality of life, health aspects in times of climate change and key skills for the future.
Another highlight is the market square event on June 14th from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the city center around the market church. This event offers interactive hands-on activities and information stands focusing on topics such as physics experiments, 3D printing and gender studies. A scavenger hunt is even organized where participants can win prizes.
Additional events and offers
The UDE has also prepared additional events that focus on current trends and technologies, including how AI applications work and decoding political speeches. Younger participants in particular can look forward to the children's university on June 25th, where the topic of light and colors will be presented in a playful way for children aged 8 to 12. The event will be rounded off with a final event, the Science Slam on June 27th in the Weststadthalle.
In accordance with the goals of sustainable urban development, as formulated for example in the “New Urban Agenda”, adopted in Quito in 2016, the Essen Science Summer not only promotes individual learning, but also community engagement. In Germany, emphasis is placed on education for sustainable development (ESD) to enable citizens to actively participate in shaping their city, which is essential for adapting to the challenges of urbanization.
The Essen Science Summer is not only an opportunity to learn, but also a platform to activate citizens to deal with issues that affect the future of our cities. For a vibrant city, education and the participatory development of strategies are essential to guarantee a sustainable and fair urban way of life. Loud ESD portal There are numerous initiatives at the municipal level that pursue precisely these approaches in order to sustainably increase the quality of life in cities.
Combining science and public participation is a powerful way to raise awareness of local and global challenges. The event is therefore a step towards an informed and engaged society.
