Grand opening of the Jordan Dental Clinic: Hope for Gambia's patients!
On May 23, 2025, the “Jordan Dental Clinic” was officially opened in Kerewan, Gambia. This clinic is named after Prof. Dr. A. Rainer Jordan, who started the project in 1994 as a student at the University of Witten/Herdecke (UW/H). Prof. Jordan attended the opening and described the naming as a great honor. It is a sign of successful help for self-help, which has borne numerous fruits in recent years.
Particularly noteworthy was the participation of the German ambassador, Klaus Botzet, who underlined the importance of the facility for Gambia's medical infrastructure. From an original student initiative, the project has developed into an important part of the healthcare system. The clinic is not only a contact point for dental care, but also offers innovative treatment methods.
Innovative treatment methods
Among the techniques used is the “Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART)” method, which enables caries treatment without the use of electricity. This is particularly important in regions where energy supplies are unreliable. By training locals to become Community Oral Health Workers (COHWs), the clinic has made a significant contribution to improving oral health over the past 19 years. Ousman Y. Bah, one of the first COHWs, now leads the Jordan Dental Clinic and is an example of the successful integration of local professionals.
Services offered at Jordan Dental Clinic includecomprehensive dental therapy services. The clinic's goal is to maintain, restore and improve oral health through experienced dentists who focus on personalized care.

The modern clinic uses the latest technologies and techniques to achieve optimal results. This not only benefits patients who need routine care, but also those who want to receive more extensive dental work. In addition, Prof. Jordan emphasizes the responsibility the clinic has towards its patients and the impact that dental care has on their lives.
Another aspect of the UW/H's commitment to social responsibility is the ongoing student initiative that regularly flies to Nepal to provide dental assistance and educational work. Prof. Jordan is also planning digital quality assurance training formats for COHWs in Gambia to further improve medical care in the region.
The opening of the Jordan Dental Clinic marks a further step in the development of dental care in Gambia and illustrates the Witten/Herdecke University's long-term commitment to promoting social initiatives in an international context.
University of Witten/Herdecke reports that Prof. Jordan and his fellow students traveled to Gambia for the first time in 1994 to establish dental care. The transformation of this project into a functioning clinic is a remarkable testament to the power of education and community engagement. Also Jordan Dental Clinic emphasizes that the clinic now makes a significant contribution to the oral health of the population.
