FernUniversität Hagen starts new course on Korean law!
From the summer semester of 2025, the FernUniversität in Hagen an innovative continuing education course for Korean law. This new offer aims to close an existing gap in the German university system, as there are currently hardly any training offers in this area of law. Prof. Dr. Julius Weitzdörfer, at the Department of East Asian Law, will lead the course. This move is particularly relevant given the Republic of Korea's growing influence on the international stage.
The FernUniversität already offers an established course of study in Japanese law and is planning to introduce another program on Taiwanese law in the winter semester of 2025. If there is enough demand, a master's degree in East Asian law could be considered in the future.
Study content and scope
The continuing education program includes eleven study letters written by recognized experts from Korea. The content is practice-oriented and comparative law, taking current legislation and case law into account. Participants work on modules that deal with topics in the areas of language, general East Asian studies and specific Korean studies.
The Korean Studies Program covers, among other things, the introduction to Korean studies and specific in-depth modules that offer comprehensive training in the field of Korean studies.
Flexibility is a central feature of the new study program. Participation is independent of location and no knowledge of Korean or a previous law degree is required. It is possible to start studying at any time, which is particularly attractive for many interested parties.
Degree and career prospects
Successful completion of the program is recognized with a “Diploma of Advanced Studies”, which is recognized according to the German Qualifications Framework (DQR 7). Graduates of the course have the opportunity to discover new professional perspectives. The training is aimed not only at lawyers, but also at Korean experts, interpreters and specialists in companies with a connection to Korea.
Tuition fees are normally 2,000 euros, but a reduced price of 1,500 euros is offered until the end of 2025. This price includes basic modules, final module examinations, supervision and a final seminar within three semesters. Additional services such as elective modules are charged at 500 euros per module, and additional semesters cost 150 euros. Networking benefits, such as access to legal databases and the ability to use an extensive body of literature, are also part of the program.
The growing interest in Korea, supported by Korean popular culture and the increasing international importance of the Republic of Korea, makes the new range of courses available at the FernUniversity particularly timely and important. In addition, the developments towards the LL.M. in East Asian law and module offerings that include other legal systems offer promising prospects for the future academic landscape.
