FernUniversität launches studyPORT: Digital tool for students!
On March 18, 2025, the FernUniversität Hagen introduced a new portal, studyPORT, which is intended as a central contact point for students. This portal offers a clear environment that enables access to essential digital services for distance learning. Elementary functions such as Moodle, the examination portal, the university library catalog and the virtual study place are accessible via studyPORT. Thanks to its responsive properties, the portal works on both tablets and smartphones, making it much easier to use for students. Access to studyPORT is via the selection menu on the FernUniversität website.
Feedback and suggestions about the new portal can be sent directly to the studyPORT team, supporting the university in its drive for continuous improvement. FernUni Hagen highlights that the project was rolled out in several phases in order to identify any problems at an early stage.
Innovative digital offerings
The studyPORT portal offers a user-friendly interface and is optimized for a variety of devices. These include proprietary versions of applications such as Citavi, Limesurvey and Zoom. Students also benefit from shared workspaces and cloud storage, which promote collaboration and exchange among each other. Dr. Cristina Pozo Vicente leads the “Teaching: Innovating Online Teaching” project, which has been running since 2017 and aims to improve the quality of distance learning. This platform fulfills the project's objectives by promoting innovation and digital skills and providing supporting services.
Students like Natalie Frede and Julia Zimmer have already given positive feedback on the new portal, which underlines the acceptance and benefits of studyPORT. In this way, the FernUniversität shows that it takes the needs of its students seriously and is actively working to improve them. els.fernuni-hagen.de offers additional information about the functions and possibilities of the new portal.
The importance of the distance learning university in Germany
The FernUniversität Hagen is not only the largest state university in Germany with around 70,000 students, but also the only distance learning university in the country. The wide range of subjects includes, among others, mathematics/computer science, law, economics, cultural and social sciences and psychology. Compared to private distance learning universities, it offers lower tuition fees, which makes it particularly attractive for many students. In the context of over 90 providers in Germany, 29 of which are universities and 54 technical colleges, the FernUni Hagen was able to assert itself as a university with flexible, location- and time-independent study programs. fernstudie.net provides an overview of the landscape of distance learning schools and universities in Germany.
Overall, the introduction of studyPORT shows that the FernUniversität Hagen is not only increasing its digital presence, but is also actively striving to continuously modernize and improve teaching operations. This is of central importance in order to meet the requirements of an increasingly digitalized educational landscape.
