Research against extremism: 2.5 million euros for study on online communities

Prof. Dr. Thorsten Quandt from the University of Münster was awarded 2.5 million euros by the European Research Council (ERC) for his research project. This is done as part of an “ERC Advanced Grant”, which extends over a period of five years. The aim of the research is to examine online communities made up of young men that form potentially dangerous environments. According to the University of Münster, the project is particularly relevant because it deals with radicalization processes in digital worlds that were previously considered refuges for games and fantasy worlds.

The research will focus on the emergence of so-called “dark communities” that spread inhumane ideologies and extremist views. A striking example is the “incel” movement, which propagates misogyny. Prof. Quandt's project is entitled "DANCE - Dark Nerd Communities: A multi-method exploration of toxic degradation in the adolescent technosphere" and is intended to understand the processes that create toxic environments and develop intervention strategies.

Methodological approaches and research background

To analyze the complexity of these dynamics, the project plans to use a combination of qualitative and quantitative social research methods, computer-aided methods, experiments and simulation studies. Quandt, who has been a professor of online communication at the University of Münster since 2012 and has headed the Department of Education and Social Sciences since 2023, looks back on a successful research career. In 2010 he received a “Starting Grant” from the ERC for a previous project on the social basis of online gaming and was appointed a Fellow of the International Communication Association in 2023.

The awarding of Advanced Grants is an example of supporting outstanding researchers in all areas of science. These awards are based on scientific excellence and the innovation potential of the projects. A total of 281 scientists, including 35 from Germany, received an Advanced Grant after around 2,500 applications were submitted.

Radicalization and the role of the Internet

The Internet plays a central role in radicalization, especially among young people. Extremist actors use digital platforms for recruiting, spreading propaganda and networking. The Office for the Protection of the Constitution has determined that extremists are increasingly using the Internet to mobilize new followers. The anonymity and the uncontrolled, rapid transfer of information are emphasized as advantages.

Particular attention is paid to the spread of extremist content, which is often subtle and difficult to recognize as such. This content ranges from online magazines to e-books. Recent research legitimizes the view that radicalization processes often have to be explained by the interaction of the online and offline worlds. Social media can be used for initial contacts, but becomes less important over time.

Radical content uses a variety of strategies: from emotional appeal through images and videos to creating images of the enemy and addressing current social debates. These approaches often target specific target groups, highlighting different topics for girls and boys. Fake news is also used strategically to emotionalize fears and create tension in society.

Overall, these developments illustrate how crucial research on online communities and radicalization processes is for understanding today's digital society. Prof. Quandt's project could provide essential insights that can contribute to both prevention and education in society.
