Redesigning research: UDE is leading four projects on data infrastructure!

The National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) has taken a decisive step to sustainably support research in Germany. On July 8, 2025, it was announced that the Joint Science Conference (GWK) had decided to continue funding the nine consortia from the first call for proposals in 2020. This decision underlines the goal of developing standards and infrastructures for data management, which is particularly important for the excellence of research work. Loud uni-due.de Up to 90 million euros will flow annually to support these consortia until 2028.

The NFDI includes a total of 27 consortia that focus on different areas of science. What is particularly noteworthy is that not only the life and natural sciences are covered, but also engineering, humanities and social sciences. The consortia eligible for funding also include specific initiatives such as a consortium for NFDI-wide basic services, which are intended to provide the basis for all further developments.

Role of the University of Duisburg-Essen

The University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) has positioned itself as an important partner within the consortia. In total, UDE researchers are involved in nine consortia, taking on the consortium leadership role in one consortium and the co-speaker role in two other consortia. Particularly worth mentioning are the projects NFDI4Society, NFDI4Biodiversity and NFDI4health, which deal with various aspects of data use in social and biological contexts.

Vision and goals of the NFDI

The vision of the NFDI is to establish data as a common asset for excellent research. This data is intended to be managed organically by the scientific community. Loud nfdi.de The initiative aims to improve the use of data not only for science, but also for society. The key points of the NFDI include the creation of legally compliant, interoperable and sustainable data infrastructures. The target group is aimed primarily at researchers who should benefit from training and strengthening their expertise in dealing with data in their everyday lives.

In summary, the NFDI's support for the various scientific areas as well as the active role of the UDE is a significant step towards integrated and effective research data management in Germany. Not only could this make research more efficient, but it could also open up innovative avenues for future scientific discoveries.
