Freedom in pictures: Students show their ideas in Dortmund!
In Dortmund, the discussion about the topic of freedom comes to life through the artistic expression of students. As part of a competition on the theme of “Freedom” set up by the Technical University of Dortmund, over 200 children and young people created impressive works. These works of art are not only a reflection on the meaning of freedom, but also an important platform for young talent to present their voices and ideas to society. tu-dortmund.de reports that freedom is considered a central prerequisite for the development of imagination and is anchored in the Basic Law. It symbolizes human dignity and respect for the freedom of others.
The exhibition, which includes these works of art, is organized by the Initiative Center for Civic Education and Local Democracy at the TU Dortmund (IZBD), in cooperation with the Children's University of the TU Dortmund. All Dortmund schools were invited to submit their creative contributions to the competition in the winter semester of 2024/2025. These included both individual and group work and were designed using various materials such as photos and drawings. izbd.tu-dortmund.de highlights that these creative works received a great response and many were selected to be presented as part of the exhibition.
Public platform for young artists
The exhibition offers students the opportunity to visually interpret their individual perspective on the topic of freedom. This presentation of the works takes place in the Dortmunder U, where the art is accessible during regular opening hours. Admission is free, which encourages broad public participation. In addition to the pictures, various supporting events are also planned that will further deepen the discussion on the topic of freedom.
A special highlight is a preview that will take place on April 24, 2025 for the project team, followed by a lecture by Prof. Christoph Käppler on children's rights. A family Sunday will be organized on May 4, 2025, which will take place from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. In addition, a special event will be offered by the Children's University on June 1, 2025, which will also cover these important topics and offer the opportunity to have further discussions.
Insights into research and teaching
With this project, the Technical University of Dortmund not only wants to offer students a platform, but also provide insights into their own research and teaching. The City Campus is a lively place that reflects the university's commitment to society. It is not just an exhibition of art, but also an opportunity for dialogue forums with urban society that promotes the idea of freedom.
The opening hours of the exhibition are Tuesday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on weekends from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The exhibition is closed on Mondays, but on public holidays those interested can view the exhibits from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
