GENIALE in Bielefeld: Experience the future of artificial intelligence!

From September 6th to November 30th, 2025, the Bielefeld knowledge workshop is hosting GENIALE, a participatory program that deals intensively with the topic of artificial intelligence (AI). aktuell.uni-bielefeld.de reports that this innovative project is organized in cooperation with Bielefeld University, Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences (HSBI) and other partners. To mark the first birthday of the Wissenwerkstadt, a birthday party will take place on the opening day from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Wilhelmstrasse 3, where various hands-on stations for young and old will be offered and discussions will take place with researchers.

The GENIALE includes a total of 38 of 54 different offers designed by scientists at Bielefeld University. Participants can look forward to over 50 formats and more than 300 dates, including workshops, science shows and exhibitions. The variety of offers is aimed not only at children and families, but also at adults, and most events are free. However, registration via the GENIALE website is required. With special workshops and over 60 additional dates, school classes can also take part in the GENIALE.

Diversity of formats and social issues

The innovative formats include the “AI Gym”, workshops on the use of AI in everyday family life and experiments on the creativity of AI. The exchange on social issues regarding the use of AI is also discussed. In particular, prejudices in AI tools and their use in schools are discussed. hsbi.de adds that HSBI members are actively invited to help shape the program. Students, teachers and employees can contribute ideas that are presented in different formats such as science cafés and art projects.

What is particularly interesting is that the GENIALE highlights the effects of AI on art, literature and media. This takes a holistic approach that also includes current technologies and their use cases in the discussion.

Ethical dimensions of artificial intelligence

As part of the GENIALE, important ethical issues are also discussed, which are based on the ethical principles for AI development adopted by the UNESCO member states. Loud unesco.at AI developments should be carried out in accordance with human rights and the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The UNESCO Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, which was adopted by all 193 member states in 2021, is the first global international law text on this topic and sets out concrete recommendations for action. It calls for a broad social discussion about the possible effects of unethical aspects of digital technologies.

In future, the GENIALE will be held annually in autumn with changing themes. The knowledge workshop city has already recorded almost 160,000 visits since it opened in September 2024 and receives support from renowned companies and institutions such as Bertelsmann, Bethel and Stadtwerke Bielefeld. This strong regional partnership underlines the knowledge workshop city's commitment to creating awareness of the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence while integrating all levels of society.
