Heartbreaking musical Carousel” celebrates its premiere in Solingen!

On Friday, May 16th, the musical “Carousel” will celebrate its premiere in an exciting production in the Pina Bausch Hall of the Theater & Konzerthaus Solingen. Kay Link, a proven teacher at the Folkwang University of the Arts, is directing. This new production not only features talented students from the Folkwang Musical study program, but also renowned actors who will bring their skills to the stage. Folkwang Professor Stephan Kanyar is responsible for the musical direction.

“Carousel” is the adaptation of the play “Liliom” by Ferenc Molnár, which originally premiered in Budapest in 1909. The action takes place in New England and revolves around the crier Billy, who falls in love with the worker Julie. A central theme of conflict is Julie's unwanted pregnancy, which leads to financial difficulties. The desperate Billy is eventually talked into a failed robbery and dies, but is given the chance to return for a day to sort things out.

Premiere and performance dates

The premiere of “Carousel” will take place at 7:30 p.m., followed by further performances on Saturday, May 17th and Saturday, May 24th, also at 7:30 p.m. in Solingen. The piece will also be shown at the Teo Otto Theater in Remscheid on Saturday, May 31st and Wednesday, June 4th, at 7:30 p.m.

The creative team behind “Carousel”

The choreography is done by Andrew Chadwick, while the stage and costume design was designed by the talented Britta Tönne. The production is also supported by the Solingen Theater Choir, which acts as a further creative contribution to the performance. The Folkwang Musical study program, which has existed since 1989 and accepts six students annually, offers comprehensive training in acting, dance and singing, which culminates in the ensemble's final presentation.

“Carousel,” which premiered on Broadway in 1945, was written by legendary composer Richard Rodgers and librettist Oscar Hammerstein II. This duo is considered one of the most successful theater teams of the 20th century. Together they created unforgettable musical theater classics such as “Oklahoma!”, “South Pacific” and “The Sound of Music,” which address themes such as racism and social issues that are still relevant today. Her work has received numerous awards, including 34 Tony Awards and 2 Pulitzer Prizes. “Carousel” contains some of the most well-known songs, including the poignant song “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
