Universities in transition: New EU requirements for AI training from 2025!

From February 2025, all universities in North Rhine-Westphalia must comply with the requirements of Article 4 of the new EU AI regulation. This regulation obliges educational institutions to ensure AI competence among their employees and users of AI systems. The project KI:edu.nrw at the Ruhr University Bochum will support North Rhine-Westphalia universities in implementing these requirements.

The project has created a central training offer for generative AI in studies and teaching. From April 2025, regular online basic training on AI in studies and teaching is planned, including in-depth training that deals with legal and ethical issues. Appropriate materials are provided for comprehensive self-education. The first basic training will take place on April 9, 2025, and participation in these trainings is free and can be certified. Online registration is required.

The EU AI regulation and its effects

The new EU AI regulation, which is considered the first global regulation to regulate artificial intelligence, requires adjustments to educational programs at universities. The aim of this regulation is to promote trust and security when dealing with AI systems. In this context, everyone involved must have sound skills in dealing with AI, such as TH Cologne explained.

The requirements of the regulation are aimed not only at companies, but also at educational institutions. They must develop strategies for further training to ensure that both students and teachers are able to recognize opportunities, risks and possible damage when using AI systems. The universities play a key role in this.

Important initiatives and training

An example of the comprehensive discussion of the topic is:Data Literacy Initiative (DaLI)the TH Cologne, which deals with data and the ethical handling of it. Professor Dr. In a lecture, Rolf Schwartmann from TH Cologne pointed out the legal and practical requirements of the AI regulation and discussed the challenges associated with chatbots and the operators of AI systems. The talk attracted great interest, with up to 100 participants both in the auditorium and online.

The discussion about the application of the AI regulation is being actively pursued by numerous educational institutions. Universities are called upon to adapt to the new requirements and make their contribution to the development of AI skills. The legal clarification of open questions about the AI regulation is also one of the goals of KI:edu.nrw to ensure greater legal certainty for institutions and their employees.
