International research network: Bochum attracts talent from 30 countries!

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is holding an important network conference at the Ruhr University Bochum from April 9th to 11th, 2025. Around 120 researchers from around 30 countries have registered for this event. The majority of participants are post-docs who receive scholarships from the foundation and work at various universities in Germany. Prof. Dr. Martin Paul, Rector of the Ruhr University Bochum, emphasizes the importance of such events for promoting talent in science.

A political roundtable discussion took place before the network conference. Members from science, foundations and politics took part in this exchange. The aim was to promote the internationalization of the Ruhr University. In North Rhine-Westphalia, 140 scholarship holders and 25 award winners are currently being looked after at 14 universities. The Ruhr University Bochum has an above-average number of 24 scholarship holders and 4 prize winners.

Research and perspectives

The 13 current scholarship holders at the RUB include scientists from Nigeria, India, Egypt, Chile and Greece. Dr. Nikolaos Tzouras, Postdoctoral Fellow at RUB, highlights the modern equipment and the top-class research groups in chemistry. His research focuses on transition metal catalysis and its application in organic synthesis.

Another participant, Dr. Maria Esperanza Rock Núñez, is a historian and studies the consequences of industrialization and deindustrialization in Chile and the Ruhr area. It combines methods from the social sciences and art to analyze social change processes. For Núñez, the stay at the RUB is a great opportunity because she sees the Ruhr area as an interesting case study.

Career opportunities and support services

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation also offers a comprehensive advisory service for scholarships and award nominations. Those interested can use the program compass to search specifically for suitable offers. Available scholarships include the Humboldt Research Scholarship and the Georg Forster Research Scholarship. The latter is recommended if the center of your life is in a developing or emerging country and the research is aimed at sustainable development.

The foundation also offers the international climate protection scholarship and organizes information events under the title “Humboldt Discoveries”. These events are intended to promote exchange between researchers and provide information about various programs. There is also a contact option for further questions and advice.

When applying for the Humboldt Research Scholarship, a convincing presentation of research relevance is crucial. Research projects with development relevance are given particular weight in the review process. Examples of successful applications include the study of food security in Nigeria and research into the effects of climate change on plants under heat and drought stress.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation therefore plays a central role not only in promoting individual scientific careers, but also in supporting international scientific collaborations and the development of relevant research for global challenges.
