Jülich launches JUPITER AI Factory: Revolution for artificial intelligence!
On March 12, 2025, the JUPITER AI Factory (JAIF) was officially founded in Jülich to play a central role in the European AI infrastructure. This is a significant initiative facilitating access to Europe's first exascale-class supercomputer. Start-ups, medium-sized businesses, industry, research institutions and the public sector benefit equally from this. The Factory is operated at the Jülich Supercomputing Center and is designed to accelerate the development, testing, improvement and scaling of AI applications. Loud RWTH Aachen JUPITER will have more than a trillion computing operations per second, making it one of the most powerful AI supercomputers in the world.
A special inference module will also accelerate access to AI models via the cloud. JAIF's focus is on strategically important application areas such as healthcare, energy production, climate change, education, media, the public sector and finance. The financing of the JUPITER AI Factory amounts to around 55 million euros and is supported by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the science ministries in North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse.
Support for start-ups and companies
The JUPITER AI Factory is intended to support German and European start-ups as well as small and medium-sized companies in particular in the development of secure and data protection-compliant AI applications. This was also highlighted by Timon Gremmels, the Hessian Minister for Science and Research. He congratulated those involved and underlined the importance of hessian.AI, which brings expertise in large language models and trustworthy AI to the cooperation. Loud TU Darmstadt The initiative aims to connect the AI ecosystem and strengthen Hesse's location and Europe's digital sovereignty.
The collaboration includes partnerships with leading German AI authorities, including RWTH Aachen, the Fraunhofer Institutes and the Hessian Center for Artificial Intelligence. Through this coalition, the expertise of all Hessian universities is brought into the JUPITER AI Factory in order to effectively apply AI innovations and create added value for companies, start-ups and the public sector. Professor Mira Mezini, co-director of hessian.AI, emphasizes that the initiative represents a quantum leap for Hesse as an AI location and will sustainably strengthen the European AI landscape.
Objectives and future developments
The central goal of the JUPITER AI Factory is to promote Europe's innovative strength and competitiveness in AI development. The AI Factory's offering horizon includes not only access to JUPITER, but also user training, personal advice and modern services for data curation and application optimization. In the future, there are also plans to expand the JUPITER inference system JARVIS, a cloud platform that supports innovative inference techniques such as “inference time scaling”.
In summary, the JUPITER AI Factory will act as an orchestrator of the AI ecosystem and organize annual networking events to promote exchange and cooperation between AI industry players. This ambitious project lays a foundation for the future development of AI applications in Europe, which is important for both science and industry.
