AI in universities: Revolutionary changes in learning and teaching!

On September 2nd and 3rd, 2025, over 350 participants met on the campus of the Ruhr University Bochum for Learning AID, Germany's largest conference on artificial intelligence (AI) and learning analytics in higher education. Rector Martin Paul welcomed those present and emphasized the crucial role of AI in the highest form of education. Since its launch in 2022, the event has established itself as a central platform for exchanging information about the latest developments in university teaching and is enjoying growing popularity.

The Learning AID is organized by the KI:edu.nrw project and funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia. Among the participants was the Minister of Culture and Science Ina Brandes, who took part in a panel discussion. Here she discussed with experts such as Prof. Dr. Manfred Bayer from the Technical University of Dortmund and Prof. Dr. Yvonne-Christin Knepper-Bartel from the Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Technology on the needs and activities for the effective use of AI in university teaching.

Advances in university teaching

Minister Brandes emphasizes that universities in North Rhine-Westphalia have already made extensive progress in the application of AI technologies. The integration of tools such as ChatGPT and other AI applications is seen as future-oriented. Loud country.nrw The application of AI opens up numerous possibilities for improving learning.

Dr. Peter Salden, overall project manager at KI:edu.nrw, described Learning AID as an important forum that brings together experts from German-speaking countries. Both research and practice-oriented aspects are addressed that deal with the questions of learning analytics and their influence on higher education. Numerous universities already use a central interface that allows anonymous access to various AI services.

Learning Analytics: A new dimension of learning

Learning Analytics (LA) is described as a central tool that uses data to improve individual learning processes. The aim is to gain action-relevant insights to optimize learning, as in transcript-open.de explained. While C.-K. While Hu and other LA applications offer great potential to better support learning, there are also challenges. Data protection and ethical aspects are important issues when implementing LA at universities.

The practical application of learning analytics is still in its early stages, and many universities have to deal with transparency, the development of a solid database and the corresponding infrastructure. Nevertheless, LA is already being used in various areas, including audience response systems and dashboards in learning management systems, to optimize the learning process.

Overall, Learning AID shows how profound the changes in the higher education sector are due to artificial intelligence. The conference offers a forum for an interdisciplinary discussion that includes both teachers and learners and thus creates a space for innovative approaches.
