Art novelty: Application deadline for exciting performance course ends soon!

The Folkwang University of the Arts has launched an exclusive open call for student artists. This is aimed at talented creators from all faculties and artistic and scientific course formats. The first work phase of the program will begin in April 2025, in which the participants will be actively involved. The application deadline for the course “Black Ritual and Durational Action,” taught by renowned performance artist Miles Greenberg, is Monday, March 31st. There are only 15 spots available in total, fueling interest in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Further information is available via the Folkwang intranet and the Folkwang email accounts, making it easier for students to access the detailed application processes.

Miles Greenberg, born in Montreal, Canada in 1997, has established himself as both an internationally recognized performance artist and researcher of body movement. He currently lives and works between Paris and New York. Greenberg's artistic practice focuses on romanticized explorations of the black body in space and is characterized by large-scale, permanent performance installations, often lasting between five and eight hours. His works evolve over time and offer the audience a non-linear narrative, which makes the structure of his performances particularly innovative.

The rise of performance art

Performance art has changed significantly in the contemporary art scene. Once considered a fringe phenomenon, it has now become a central medium of artistic expression. This art form redefines the boundaries between artist, work and audience. Live displays and interactive elements enable direct and provocative communication that challenges the audience to become part of the work of art.

Renowned artists such as Marina Abramovic and Yoko Ono use performance art to explore personal and social issues. The medium is not just limited to art galleries but takes place in various environments, be it public spaces or exhibition spaces. This allows for a broader reach and appeal to a diverse audience, often going beyond the scope of traditional art.

Greenberg's upcoming course at Folkwang University highlights the increasing importance of performance art in this dynamic art field. By collaborating with such an innovative artist, the organizers hope to achieve a wide-ranging exchange about social, political and cultural issues that are addressed in performance art. The course not only promises enrichment for the participating students, but also a valuable examination of current trends in contemporary art.

For interested students, the opportunity to take part in Greenberg's course means gaining direct access to creative processes and the latest developments within performance art. The Open Call at the Folkwang University of the Arts could open the next chapter in the diverse practice of performance artists and open up valuable perspectives for future discussions about art and society.
