Teachers in focus: strategies against racism and extremism!

May 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. In this context, current political debates and the shift to the right among young voters are an opportunity for exciting discussions about topics such as extremism, anti-Semitism and anti-Muslim racism. The Center for Teacher Training (ZLB) at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) is therefore launching a new series of lectures to prepare teacher training students and other interested parties for the challenges in schools. uni-due.de reports that the lectures are specifically aimed at equipping prospective teachers with the didactic and ethical skills they need in prevention work.

Project manager Dilek Gürsoy-Posse explains that the lecture series is organized in cooperation with the ZLB's Basic and Advanced Training (BuAT). The events take place from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. in the library hall on the Essen campus. Anyone interested can register at diversiteach@uni-due.de. In addition to the training, current social issues are also addressed in order to promote exchange and create awareness.

Program of the lecture series

The program in the summer semester of 2025 includes a series of lectures that highlight different aspects of racism and diversity at school:

  • 12. Mai 2025: Prof. Dr. Karim Fereidooni – „Antimuslimischer Rassismus und Antisemitismus in der Schule“
  • 13. Mai 2025: Diren Yeşil – „Bildung im Spannungsfeld von Rassismus und emanzipativen Strategien – Empowerment von Bi_PoC in Schule und Lehre“
  • 20. Mai 2025: Dr. Anton Hieke – „Judentum und Vielfalt im schulischen Alltag“
  • 17. Juni 2025: Prof. Dr. Hendrik Härtig – „Wie neutral kann (Physik)Unterricht in unserer Demokratie sein?“
  • 15. Juli 2025: Dr. Sally Gerhardt und Franziska Stracke – „Professionalisierung für diskriminierungskritische Perspektiven in der Lehrkräftebildung“

In addition to the lecture series, there has recently been intensive discussion about the social effects of extremism and racism in Germany. The topic became particularly topical due to the Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023 and the subsequent war in the Gaza Strip. bpb.de addressed the instrumentalization of such events by extremist groups and the resulting social tensions.

A central point of the debate is the need to develop preventative strategies to deal with anti-Semitism and anti-Muslim racism. A report from the German Youth Institute examines the connections between anti-Muslim racism and Islamist extremism in educational practice. It is also reported that jugendschutz.net provides information about Islamist influencers who spread anti-women, anti-queer and anti-democratic content via social media. This highlights the urgent need for targeted education and awareness.

In view of these challenges, the ZLB lecture series shows how important it is to optimally prepare prospective teachers for the complex topics and challenges in their teaching. Initiatives like these are crucial to promote an inclusive and tolerant school culture that also protects against extremist ideologies.
