Münster scientist becomes President of the AIS - A new course in business informatics!
Prof. Dr. Jan vom Brocke from the University of Münster has successfully won the election as President of the Association for Information Systems (AIS). When he takes office on July 1, 2025, he will be the 32nd President of the AIS and the third representative of a German university in this important position. The AIS was founded in 1994 and today has members from over 100 countries and has established itself as a central institution for exchange in business information technology. Jan vom Brocke holds the chair for business informatics and business process management at the University of Münster. His role as Director of the Institute for Information Systems and as Academic Director of the European Research Centers for Information Systems (ERCIS) demonstrates his extensive expertise in this field. He is considered a pioneer of business information technology and has made a name for himself particularly through his design-oriented research and his commitment to sustainability. He is also recognized as the founder of the discipline of process science.
Strategic commitment and innovations
Before his election as President of AIS, vom Brocke developed a strategy paper that proposed an AIS Impact Agenda. This agenda aims to identify central issues in business informatics and to develop solutions together with existing representatives from business and society. Planned new formats for science communication include, among other things, AI-based media services that represent innovative ways to exchange research results.
In the past, Jan vom Brocke was Vice Dean for International Affairs at the University of Münster and gained international experience as an Academic Research Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He was also appointed as an Honorary Distinguished Professor at the National University of Ireland in Maynooth and as a visiting professor at the University of Liechtenstein.
Influential publications and international networking
Jan vom Brocke's research is regularly published in leading journals, including Management Science, Information Systems Research and MIT Sloan Management Review. He has also written and edited numerous books, such as the “International Handbook of Business Process Management” and “Green Business Process Management”. His teaching career also includes renowned institutions, including the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland and the Smurfit School of Business in Ireland.
As a respected scientist who is internationally listed among the most influential researchers in business informatics, vom Brocke is also valued as a member of various academic networks. He has also presented engagements at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia and supporting companies and governments on their path to digital transformation.
