New Prosektur in Cologne: State-of-the-art teaching for medical students starts!
On September 8, 2025, the new Prosectory of the University of Cologne opened its doors in the Lindenthal district. The Minister for Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia, Ina Brandes MdL, was present at the opening. She emphasized the importance of the new facility for training future physicians. Professor Dr. Joybrato Mukherjee, Rector of the University of Cologne, Professor Dr. Gereon Fink, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, as well as other high-ranking representatives of the faculty and clinics also took part in the event.
The Prosektur comprises five above-ground and two underground floors with a total usable area of 9,000 square meters. The new building replaces an earlier building from the 1960s on Joseph-Stelzmann Straße and was realized with a budget of around 82 million euros. In addition, almost 7 million euros went into the initial setup. The financing of the project was secured through the university pact.
Modern teaching and learning conditions
A key feature of the new Prosektur is its accessibility and the integration of modern ventilation technology and cooling ceiling systems. These technical improvements not only provide a comfortable learning environment, but also enable year-round anatomy instruction. Previously, the dissection course was not possible in the summer semester due to health risks from exposure to formaldehyde. The new air-conditioned classrooms not only improve teaching, but also the curriculum design of the courses.
Around 230 students of human medicine, dentistry and neuroscience take part in the courses on macroscopic and microscopic anatomy each semester. The new building has two large preparation rooms, each with 15 tables, supplemented by three individual work rooms and a histology room with 154 microscope positions. In addition, offices and seminar rooms are also integrated into the planning.
Research and continuing education
The Prosektur is not just designed for teaching. It also includes research areas for experimental medicine and trauma surgery. Up to 10 clinical training courses take place each year in different specialist areas, including topics such as orthopedics, ENT and neurosurgery. The new teaching operations are scheduled to begin in the summer semester of 2026, which will enable early use of the modern facilities.
The application of BIM (Building Information Modeling) methodology in the planning and construction process promises efficient operation of the prosecution and a positive environment for the medical faculty's educational goals. This means that the Prosektur will become a long-term support for medical education in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Special contact for questions is provided by Professor Dr. Martin Scaal and Dr. Anna Euteneuer, who can provide further information on the use and offers of the new Prosektur.
