News from Siegen: Health sciences are experiencing a breath of fresh air!
On April 1, 2025, the University of Siegen will begin a complete restructuring of its medical-related courses and set new accents in health science. This completes the repatriation of the former Faculty of Life Sciences into Faculties I to IV uni-siegen.de reported. In the future, the areas of public health, psychology, health services research as well as digital medicine and biomedicine will be anchored in the respective faculties. This is intended to promote interdisciplinary collaboration in health research.
As part of the innovations, the central scientific institution “Health Research” was founded in order to further advance basic research in this area. The successful degree programs of the former Faculty of Life Sciences will be continued without interruption, including the bachelor's and master's degree programs in Psychology at Faculty II as well as the bachelor's degree program in Digital Biomedical Health Sciences and the master's degree programs in Biomedical Technology and Medical Data Science, which will also open on April 1, 2025 at Faculty IV start. The Master's program in Digital Public Health will be continued at Faculty I.
Cooperations with health facilities
A crucial part of the new structure is the in-depth cooperation with health facilities in the region. These partnerships enable students from the medical faculties to gain practical experience with clinical training partners in Siegen, such as medfak.uni-bonn.de explained. This gives students the opportunity to complete block internships in specialist departments and to experience various clinical pictures directly. These practical insights into medical issues, especially in rural areas, are an essential part of medical training and contribute to improving differential diagnostic skills.
The block internships take place during the semester break from March to September and last between two and a half and ten days. Current specialties include internal medicine, anesthesiology, surgery, urology, neurology, pediatrics, and gynecology and obstetrics. The offering is continually expanding to offer students a broader range of experiences.
Practical experience in health sciences
In addition, the University of Trier offers practical content in the field of health sciences. Here, students must complete a seven-week compulsory internship, which can also take place with regional cooperation partners such as health authorities, hospitals or sports facilities uni-trier.de describes. In order to promote intercultural skills, there is also the option of completing an internship abroad, which is often supported by financial support such as the Erasmus+ program. The uniSPORT employees also offer seminars and provide practical experience in the area of preventive and health sports. This complements the interdisciplinary training in health sciences and contributes to the comprehensive training of students.
