The most important components of the EduLab include:

  • 4 Trainingsräume

  • 1 Core Unit Labor für klinisch-wissenschaftliches Arbeiten
  • 1 Mensa

Construction time and financing

The construction work lasted a total of 28 months, starting in September 2022. The key milestones of the project include the laying of the foundation stone on November 25, 2022 and the topping out ceremony on June 15, 2023. The total investment volume amounted to 11.4 million euros. The financing was provided by a joint initiative in which the University of Bielefeld, funding from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the cities of Bielefeld and Halle (Westphalia), the Bielefeld Clinic as well as the Bielefeld Clinic Support Group and numerous regional companies and institutions were involved.

A particularly noteworthy facility is the Skills Lab, which is located on the first floor of the EduLab. This was financed by generous donations from the Bielefeld Clinic Support Group, which to date have totaled 357,870 euros. Here, medical students can learn practical skills and train in interdisciplinary teamwork. Prof. Theodor Windhorst, chairman of the support group, emphasized the central role of the Skills Lab in the training of future doctors, as it creates an environment in which the necessary knowledge and practical skills can be imparted.

What’s on offer in the Skills Lab

In the Skills Lab, students can gain practical experience in a safe environment. This includes simulations of emergency situations as well as the use of a laparoscopy trainer and various models for dealing with difficult airways. At the opening, guests had the opportunity to observe a demonstration of first aid to a seriously injured person using a simulation manikin, which impressively demonstrated the high technical equipment of the EduLab.

Dr. Klaus Reinhardt, President of the German Medical Association, and Dr. Dorothea Stahl, Director of University Medicine, both pointed out the importance of such training and further education offers in order to meet the growing need for qualified doctors in the region. Dr. Kai Johanning, one of the leaders of the Skills Lab, explained how the practical training opportunities improve medical training.

The Skills Lab concept is based on successful models from other universities, such as the Interdisciplinary Longitudinal Skills Lab Curriculum, which was introduced by the Heidelberg Medical Faculty in the summer semester of 2007 and is considered an important part of medical training. Similar efforts are also taking place in Bielefeld in order to optimally prepare students for the challenges in everyday clinical practice. Participation in such training courses is both mandatory for medical students and a valuable opportunity to deepen their knowledge in a realistic environment.

In summary, it can be said that the new student house “EduLab” not only offers a modern educational facility, but also functions as an important center for medical training in the region. Here, future doctors will acquire the skills they need to act as competent healthcare professionals. Bielefeld thus becomes a beacon of modern medical training aktuell.uni-bielefeld.de highlights.
