Neurology in Bochum: New director brings a breath of fresh air to Bergmannsheil!

Prof. Dr. Tobias Ruck took over the management of neurology at Bergmannsheil in February 2025. The Bergmannsheil is part of the University Hospital of the Ruhr University Bochum and plays a central role in neuroscientific research. Ruck emphasizes the close integration of clinical and research, which creates excellent conditions for his team. This connection is particularly important for driving innovation in patient care.

A focus of neurology at Bergmannsheil is neuromuscular diseases. These include myopathies, disorders of neuromuscular transmission and motor neuron diseases. The neuromuscular outpatient clinic specializes in caring for patients with a variety of illnesses. These include, among others, inflammatory myopathies, metabolic myopathies and muscular dystrophic diseases. The outpatient clinic relies on interdisciplinary care and aims to identify and treat complications at an early stage.

Research and treatment priorities

The other focal points of neurology at Bergmannsheil include neurorehabilitation and pain therapy. Ruck and his team also focus on treating patients with neurological diseases that arise as a result of work accidents or occupational diseases. Another important aspect is emergency and stroke care, which forms an integral part of the care mandate.

The neuromuscular outpatient clinic offers numerous diagnostic and therapeutic services. One of the main tasks is differential diagnosis, which is often carried out before a possible inpatient stay. Both causal and symptomatic therapies are initiated. For genetic diseases, the outpatient clinic works closely with experts to carry out comprehensive family examinations and inform patients about genetic testing.

Expanded research initiatives

Research within the neuromuscular center in Zurich, with which Ruck is in close contact, deals with the influence of physical training on neuromuscular and neurodegenerative diseases. This initiative is supported by networks such as the European Huntington Disease Network (EHDN) and places particular emphasis on the clinical, pathological and genetic characterization of patients. The researchers pay particular attention to diseases such as Huntington's disease and myasthenia gravis.

International collaboration, including with university hospitals in Zurich and London, enables scientists to develop innovative therapy concepts. In addition, an electroneuromyography department (ENMG) investigates approximately 1,500 cases annually, highlighting the facility's extensive diagnostic capacity. The aim of these research projects is to continuously improve the care and treatment options for patients with neuromuscular diseases.

In summary, it can be said that Bergmannsheil, under the leadership of Ruck, operates at the interface of research and practice, which is of great importance not only for patient care, but also for the scientific community. The progressive approaches and interdisciplinary collaboration could be groundbreaking for the treatment of neuromuscular diseases in the future.
