Renovation of the Chinese Garden: Risk of cost explosion!

On July 31, 2025, the renovation work in the Chinese Garden at the Ruhr University Bochum is in full swing. A team of four construction specialists from China, consisting of Hu Xiaojun, Gu Tianming, Jin Zhongming and Cheng Jinhuan, are on site to contribute their expertise in masonry, roofing, carpentry and rooms according to traditional Chinese construction methods. This work is necessary as the garden requires extensive repairs after eleven years of intensive use in order to preserve its unique cultural value. How news.rub.de reports, the project includes repairing the roofs and replacing the wood trim.

During the renovation, however, an unexpected need for repairs was discovered on the thatched roof of the fishing hut. Since the Chinese specialists do not have the necessary know-how for thatched roofs, the support association “The Chinese Garden e.V.” A northern German company was commissioned at short notice to take care of the necessary repair work. This now leads to additional unexpected costs, which the support association has to cover with further donations.

Financial challenges

The total need for the repair of the Chinese Garden is estimated at over 100,000 euros. Despite financial support from helpers and funding from Bochum municipal utilities, a funding gap remains. The association is therefore asking for further support in order to maintain the garden for the population in the long term. Donations can be made via account details or a gofundme link be performed.

In order to promote the project, the support association also offers special tours for companies, institutions and private groups. These tours are not only a way to support the renovation, but also offer an insight into the rich tradition and special architectural design of the Chinese gardens in Germany, whose philosophy often focuses on elements such as heaven, earth and water, similar to Bethmannpark in Frankfurt, which was created in 1989 as the “Garden of Heavenly Peace”. deutschland.de explained.

The other renovation work in the Chinese Garden is coming to an end. These include tasks that do not require specific Chinese expertise, such as scaffolding and painting, which are carried out by specialist local companies. The aim is to reopen the garden to the public in mid-August 2025 once the work is complete.
