Revolutionary hydrogen strategies: Bochum and Duisburg are shaping the future!

On May 27, 2025, the completion of the StEAM project at the Ruhr University Bochum and the University of Duisburg-Essen was announced. In this three-year research project, scientists examined various scenarios for hydrogen production and worked on sector transformation in the energy system. A key result is the development of a global energy system model that links the electricity and hydrogen sectors. This model is intended to provide important insights for politics and business and contribute to shaping the global hydrogen economy. Under the direction of Prof. Dr. Valentin Bertsch and Prof. Dr. Christoph Weber, the researchers have made significant progress in analysis and strategy development. In addition, the project is seen as crucial for the future of energy production and use, especially with regard to the challenges of the energy transition.

The Ruhr University Bochum itself is not only an institution for high-quality research, but also an important place for learning and development. It is the first university to be founded after the Second World War and is characterized by its campus structure. The campus is spacious, measuring approximately 400 x 900 meters and divided into four equal-sized fields that are assigned to specific teaching areas. The cafeteria and the auditorium are located in the central area, while well-thought-out traffic organization clearly separates pedestrians and cars. This means that all university facilities can be reached within 15 minutes on foot, which makes student life even easier.

Interior design and building history

In 2013, the IC engineering building complex underwent a comprehensive core renovation according to the plans of Gerber Architects. This project took both monument protection and the urban development context into account and led to a functional redesign of the interior and the facade. For the renovation work, the university received, among other things, the Good Buildings 2014 award from the BDA Bochum, which underlines the high quality of the architecture and its adaptation to modern standards.

Educational offerings in the field of hydrogen technology

In order to meet the current requirements in the field of hydrogen technologies, the Ruhr University Bochum also offers a master's degree in hydrogen technology and economics. This course aims to actively involve students in the energy and mobility transition through innovative hydrogen solutions. Graduates gain a comprehensive understanding of the technology chain, ranging from generation to storage to applications. Particular attention is paid to developing new products that are not only economical but also sustainable. The course offering is flexible and includes both online and on-site lectures, allowing students to participate from anywhere.

Given the growing importance of hydrogen technologies in the global economy and their potential to promote a clean energy future, it is significant that the Ruhr University Bochum and the University of Duisburg-Essen play a central role in this development with their research projects and study programs. The knowledge gained and the training of future specialists are crucial steps on the way to a sustainable hydrogen economy.
