Experience creation: Environmental ethics from Judaism to Islam in Münster!
On April 4, 2025, the exhibition “We are Creation” with large-format photographs by Hans-Günther Kaufmann will open in Münster. The exhibition is organized by the Center for Islamic Theology at the University of Münster in cooperation with the university's representative against anti-Semitism. The opening will be accompanied by a varied program that will take place from April 7th.
The accompanying program includes a series of lectures that deal with the environmental ethical foundations of Judaism, Christianity and Islam. These events emphasize the ethical principles of the Abrahamic religions, which emphasize humility and environmental responsibility. The venue is the Münster district government, Domplatz 1-3, and admission is free, although registration is required.
Diverse lectures and discussions
The following lectures and a panel discussion will be offered as part of the accompanying program:
- 7. April, 14 Uhr: Dr. Deborah Williger – „Impulse zur Bewahrung der Schöpfung und zum Umgang mit Vielfalt aus jüdischer Perspektive“.
- 8. April, 18 Uhr: Prof. Dr. Simone Sinn – „Impulse zur Bewahrung der Schöpfung und zum Umgang mit Vielfalt aus christlicher Perspektive“.
- 9. April, 14 Uhr: Prof. Dr. Mouhanad Khorchide – „Impulse zur Bewahrung der Schöpfung und zum Umgang mit Vielfalt aus muslimischer Perspektive“.
- 14. April, 19 Uhr: Prof. Dr. Stephan Grigat – „Vom Mufti zu Abraham: Geschichte der arabisch-israelischen Annäherung seit 1948“.
- 15. April, 18 Uhr: Podiumsdiskussion.
These events provide an important platform for interreligious dialogue and a deeper examination of the challenges of environmental awareness.
Design of exhibition texts
The exhibition is part of a larger context of conveying cultural and religious content. The quality of the exhibition texts plays a central role, as museum visitors - mostly laypeople without specialist knowledge - often come not to read but to look. museumskulturen.de emphasizes that the texts serve to reveal the meaning of the exhibits and make connections visible.
It is essential that the texts are designed in such a way that they are pleasant to read. This includes an appropriate font size, sans serif fonts and sufficient contrast between text and background. Text should run over a calm, solid color background to maximize readability.
The balance between informative clarity and readability is a challenge. Exhibition texts must be able to convey central content without distracting attention from the exhibits.
With the combination of impressive photographic art and informative lectures, the exhibition “We are Creation” has the potential to provide important impulses for interreligious dialogue and environmental awareness. Given the increasing challenges in the field of environmental ethics, this approach is not only timely but essential.
The diverse events and carefully curated content of the exhibition could be an important step towards a co-created future in which respect and responsibility towards creation are at the core.
