Writing night in Düsseldorf: Creative and productive until midnight!

The fifth digital writing night will take place on March 6, 2025 in the University and State Library (ULB) Düsseldorf. This event is offered from 4:00 p.m. to midnight for students of all disciplines. The main goal of the writing night is to support students in academic work and writing. This year there are five lectures on relevant topics of the writing process on the program.

The lectures cover a variety of aspects, from procrastination and avoidance behavior to specific tools for academic writing. Other topics include correctly citing print and online sources, the safe handling of data such as measurement results and survey data, and the use of AI tools for targeted “chatting” about writing projects. The ULB Düsseldorf reports on this that the event will be held in collaboration with Student Services, the Heine Center for Scientific Continuing Education and the Writing Advisory Service.

Virtual writing rooms and creative breaks

In addition to the lectures, two virtual writing rooms will be available. The first room is designed as a quiet room to enable working together in a quiet atmosphere. The second room will offer writing consultations starting at 8 p.m. These offers create a space for productive work and exchange during the writing night. Registration is required to take part in the event. Further information is available on the ULB Düsseldorf website.

Another notable writing event is the “Long Night of Scientific Work,” which will be held on January 16, 2025. This event is aimed at students, employees and doctoral candidates and takes place via a live stream via Zoom. The program begins at 6:00 p.m. with a welcome, followed by various workshops and consultations designed to support participants in their writing processes. The University of Anhalt and the Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences will support this night together.

Writing centers as valuable resources

The Writing Center at Leuphana University offers numerous support services for students to improve their writing skills. This includes individual writing advice in different languages, open consultation hours and workshops that teach strategies for academic writing. Leuphana reports that such offers are particularly important in supporting students in the development of their scientific way of thinking and writing.

The combination of events such as the digital writing night and the writing center offerings shows how important the topic of academic writing is at universities. They not only offer students a platform for learning, but also the opportunity to test and improve their skills in practice.
