Symposium in Bielefeld: Focus on uncertainties from migration to research!

On August 25, 2025, Bielefeld University announced an upcoming interdisciplinary symposium that will take place on October 8 at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF). Under the title “Impacts of uncertainty on migration processes, political decisions and research”, the event is being held as part of the ERC-funded INTER.SECT project. Registrations are open until September 5th, a deadline that is fast approaching.

The symposium will consider three key levels of uncertainty. First, the subjective experiences of migrants are examined to illustrate the different migration contexts. Secondly, the focus is on political responses to migration that create new uncertainties through measures such as isolation and entry restrictions. Third, the uncertainties in research practice are considered, including unpredictable political changes and incomplete data.

The goals and the project context

The overarching goal of the symposium is to develop strategies that enable researchers to deal with the structural and political challenges that exist in migration research. Professor Dr. Kayvan Bozorgmehr leads the INTER.SECT project and the symposium, which is supported by well-known partners. The partners include the Faculty of Health Sciences, the BAMF Research Data Center, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Technology and Methods Platform for Networked Medical Research (TMF). A key cooperation partner is the Center for Uncertainty Studies (CeUS) at Bielefeld University.

The INTER.SECT project is funded by an ERC Consolidator Grant of two million euros and will run for five years until June 2029. The focus is on the influence of the living environment on the health and mortality of quota refugees.

Insights into migration research

Accompanying this symposium is the Journal for Migration Research (ZMF) a forum for academic discussions on migration and social change. The ZMF, published by the Institute for Migration Research and Intercultural Studies (IMIS) at the University of Osnabrück, deals with both historical and current movements of people and their effects in contexts of origin, transit and destination.

The magazine publishes twice a year and contains both German and English-language articles, which are divided into essays and discussion contributions. While essays address specific questions in migration research and are subject to a double anonymized review process, discussion contributions address current debates and are checked by the editors.

A variety of editors ensure the high quality of the contributions, which come from experts from various disciplines. The aim is to promote scientific discussion about the complex dimensions of migration and to shed light on the challenges of social change.

The symposium and the ZMF's ongoing publications not only present research results, but also open up perspectives for future strategic approaches in migration research.
