Sustainability Day in Bonn: Ideas for a greener future!

On June 13th, 2025 it took place at the University of Bonn Sustainability Day 2025 will take place. The event was organized by Team N, which consists of the Vice-Rectorate, the Sustainability Office and the Green Office. The aim of the event was to actively anchor sustainability in research, teaching and operations.

This year's event featured a variety of activities, including an interactive exercise bike operated by a student to heat water for tea. Visitors also had the opportunity to make storage boxes from used tetra packs. A student presented an experiment on renewable energies, while the Healthy Campus Bonn provided information about local alternatives to superfoods. In addition, various groups demonstrated how academic learning can help address societal challenges.

Information and guided tours

The Real Estate Department offered tours to the roof of the lecture hall center, where those interested could Photovoltaic system could visit. This PV system extends over several modules that are aligned in two directions. The University of Bonn operates a total of seven such systems, with the eighth already under construction and the ninth in planning. These systems generate around 360,000 kWh of electricity annually, which is equivalent to the consumption of 100 three-person households.

However, photovoltaic systems also raise questions of sustainability. The production of solar modules is energy-intensive, especially the production of silicon, glass and aluminum. Sustainability depends heavily on the electricity mix used in production. In certain regions, such as China, the CO2 balance can be significantly worse than in Europe, which puts the ecological benefits of solar systems into perspective DW reported.

The University of Bonn is also pursuing an energy strategy from 2022 with the goal of reducing consumption by 20%. So far, almost 18 million kWh have been saved.

Food and fair trade

Another highlight of the event was the pop-up fair divider Food sharing Bonn, who distributed rescued food. Free, fair trade coffee and tea specialties were offered on the Coffee Bike. The University of Bonn has been certified as a “Fairtrade University” since 2020 and the student union only offers fair trade hot drinks in its canteens.

The culmination was a fair soccer tournament in which five teams competed against each other in Human Table Soccer. The footballs used were fairly traded and experts were invited to discuss sustainability in sport. 1. FC Köln was the first Bundesliga club to be certified according to the ZNU standard. The “Partizan Neugrad” team secured victory in the football tournament.

Fairtrade projects go beyond short-term relief efforts and aim for sustainable supply chains, gender equality and environmental protection. Loud Fairtrade.org is the long-term approach to create comprehensive and lasting change.
